Notre Dame cathedral has caught fire, according to the Parisian fire service and eyewitnesses.
Footage posted online shows a large fire engulfing the upper part of the cathedral, with the flames licking around its two bell towers.
A major operation was under way, the fire department added, while a city hall spokesman said on Twitter that the area was being cleared.
Officials in Paris said the fire could be linked to renovation works being carried out at the cathedral.
It comes after France's Saint Sulpice church , used in the filming of Dan Brown’s ‘Da Vinci Code’ thriller, caught fire in March.

I’m actually in Paris right now. Had a late lunch a few blocks from Notre Dame but the first I heard of the fire was when a friend from the States texted me the news after I got back to my hotel.
Weird.
My prayers to the French people as well, however Notre Dame Cathedral - even if any of it survives somehow - will never be the same. And any renovation will NEVER be 'better' than it was before. Never.
Just heard that filthy son of a bitch Shepherd Smith rudely cut off a French politician who was about to insinuate this was perhaps the work of the usual suspects.

Had read online that the fire is an accident because of renovation work and not set.
And for their trouble they got their heads shaved and then were dragged through the streets on “shame parade”.

Shep Smith just threw an ELECTED French official off the air for daring to bring terrorism into the discussion. You would think inquiring minds would want to know what someone on the scene has to say.

Same here. No matter what rebuild / renovation they do now to the once-beautiful iconic Notre Dame Cathedral, it will *never* be even close to what it once was. :-(
