Former President George W. Bush said Monday that the U.S. should not shy away from enforcing its borders but he also called on Congress to set aside political acrimony and approve a broad legalization for illegal immigrants.
Mr. Bush, who himself led a massive round of wall-building beginning in 2006, did not specifically praise or attack President Trump, who is now engaged in another wall fight.
But the former president did say Congress should again attempt to tackle comprehensive immigration reform. Thats the name backers use for bills offering amnesty from deportation to millions of illegal immigrants.
Mr. Bush attempted to strike agreement on such a bill in 2006 and again in 2007, but failed both times, with his own party rebelling against him over border security, and some Democrats balking because they felt his plans would undermine American workers.
He spoke at a naturalization ceremony for new citizens, hosted at the Bush Presidential Center in Dallas.

Regards,
The more he talks, the higher Trump’s popularity. The Bush Republicans have become their own Kryptonite.
A lot of the troubles with immigration we have today are the result of W’s feckless inaction through 2 terms as President . He was listening to his dad....He totally set it up for Obama to further screw up .
Add to this , W was the major ‘decision maker’ that let hordes of Somali ‘refugees’ in . Look where that has left us .
I would like to see Trump annul any and all refugee/citizenship status’s that were derived from his predecessor’s screw ups and ask them ALL to leave .
MUST the globalist Bushes forever plague our nation? They make me weary.
We were supposed to get 700 miles of good border wall under bush. But we got like 40 miles of crap fencing.
W, you sure pissed away the support you had in the early 2000’s.
algore would have been much worse, but you became such a major disappointment.
Just shut up and go away. Preserve what little credibility and approval you might still have.

Comprehensive immigration reform = the Democrats have no policies so here’s some soft language that means nothing and causes problems for the U.S. if put in action.
GET BENT GB
All I needed to know about 911 I figured out when you didnt close the borders. GFYGB.
Is Bushs position on immigration any different from Jared Kushners and Ivankas?
The more he talks, the higher Trumps popularity. The
Problem is, word has it that Trumps son in law is drafting an amnesty bikl
My first thought exactly.
I never saw a guy work so hard to make the people who supported him, then dislike him.
Someone didn’t know their true colors until 2016???
He covered for the slaughter of 3,000 Americans.
He was in bed so much with the Sauds i’m surprised he didn’t get pregnant by them.
There was a time when I had some respect for W. Those days are long gone.
Yes, Jared and Ivanka support President Trump.
GWB is saying that exact same things that all the democrats I saw on TV yesterday were saying. We need comprehensive immigration reform.
What is comprehensive immigration reform? No one seems to be challenged as to what it would entail. You can be sure it would, at the very least, mean amnesty for almost all illegals already in country. It probably also would call for a manifold increase in immigration quotas. Does anyone think otherwise?
Amen
