What is kratom? And why is it being promoted as a wellness product to our kids?
My college-age son called me recently and asked me about kratom, saying that it was all over campus and even some of his friends were trying it. Thankfully, I got the phone call asking about what it was rather than him just hopping on the bandwagon of trying the latest trend. What is it? he asked. And for once, I had to admit, that although I had heard of it, I didnt know much else about it.
This concerned me on many levels. How is there a wellness product being promoted and sold all over a college campus and I, a doctor and a parent, know very little about it?
And now, after doing my research, I feel compelled to spread the word about not only what this trendy new supplement is, but to warn everyone of the dangers associated with it.
Mitragyna speciosa, commonly known as kratom, comes from a tropical tree native to Southeast Asia primarily Malaysia and Thailand. Most commonly the leaves are brewed as a tea or even chewed directly. My son tells me that the tea form is most common, and a tea labeled green tea and kratom is quite popular and being sold in most stores around his campus.
However, kratom is not a safe, benign plant. In fact, emerging data is providing strong evidence that kratom and its compounds work on the same central (brain) nervous system receptors as opioids, and therefore have the potential for addiction and abuse.
It is because of this opioid association that people are using kratom for pain relief and the euphoric high. But patients are also, according to the FDA, using kratom to treat opioid withdrawal symptoms.

Khat. It’s what 95% of the Somalians spend their Simolians on. All those Skinnies can’t be wrong.
Just what we need. More snowflakes on drugs.
Works great for pain if you can get over the taste.
Love your tagline :)
Its like Brawndo only better, or so Ive heard.
Just what the next generation needs. Mind altering drugs to go along with the Godless socialism and depravity being shoved down everyone’s throats.
Perhaps the godless socialism is why they need the drugs?
I’m reminded of the song “another brick in the wall”. But it’s not a wall, it’s a broad road that leads to destruction.
>Its like Brawndo only better, or so Ive heard.
Hell yeah, it’s got electrolytes too!!
That Fox News article reads like something Jeff Sessions would have written. Real balanced...not. Prohibition tone...yes.
From what I have read most kratom users are disappointed with the weak mind-altering effects, yet it works well for pain and gives a little energy boost with a real small dose.
Culling the herd.
“It’s what Plants Crave!”
The Movie,
“Idiocracy”

Lol “...to our kids”
Good grief, Faux News Correspondent, if those were my kids I would be the one taking drugs.
There have been 100 reported deaths in the past 17 months where people had kratom in their system, but ~80% of them also had large amounts of heroin, fentanyl, prescription painkillers or cocaine in their system as well. I suspect they were trying to kick their habit with kratom, failed, got high and ODed.
For the 17 people who died with only kratom in their system, every drug is going to have a small number of people who have a bad reaction to it, especially if you are taking far more than the recommended dose. Tylenol kills 10,000s every year by destroying their livers, and I suspect kratom has a far lower death rate than Tylenol.
