Illinois Senate Tells Trump, Show Your Tax Returns Or Be Barred From The 2020 Ballot

The Democratic-led Illinois Senate voted Thursday to compel President Trump to release five years’ worth of his personal income tax returns or be barred from appearing on the state’s presidential ballot next year.

The state is joining a movement of other Democratic states that aims to force the president to open up his personal finances by releasing his tax returns, something he stubbornly has refused to do and reiterated again this week.

During contentious floor debate in the Illinois statehouse, Trump’s name wasn’t mentioned once by the legislation’s sponsor, state Sen. Tony Munoz, a Chicago Democrat who insisted he merely is trying to shed more transparency on the presidential campaign.

“If you want to run for vice president or president of the United States, hey, what’s wrong with providing your tax returns for the past five years?” Munoz asked his colleagues ahead of the Senate’s 36-19 vote in favor of his bill.

“If you’ve got nothing to hide, you shouldn’t worry about anything,” he continued. “That’s how I see it.”

Since before Trump was elected in 2016, Democrats have been trying to pressure him to release his tax returns in hopes of illuminating possible business relationships or sources of income from foreign powers, including Russia.

Of course, it's legal, Snowbird. It requires a careful reading of Article 1, Section 1, Clause 5. You don't even have to squint at the penumbras.
No Person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any Person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty-five Years, been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States, and delivered his tax returns to the Legislative.

It won’t happen in 2020. Not enough states have approved it.

The Dems are in extreme panic mode. When the wall gets completed and deportations are actually keeping ahead of the influx of new illegals, the left coast will lose population, which when the census is counted they will most likely lose house seats and Electoral College votes. This will most likely make a liberal democrats chances of winning the Electoral College vote near impossible. They must stop Trump at all cost.

Good analysis, but it’s not just politicians pushing minority groups. I don’t watch live tv at all, but I turned on the Masters yesterday. I was absolutely shocked at the commercials. Apparently the USA does not have a single remaining white male living within its borders and a woman invented the Mercedes automobile.

This sounds like an effort to deprive the President of his civil rights. Any person has the right to keep his or her tax returns confidential. Other than in a legal proceeding or by court order, the IRS must honor that confidentiality. By passing this law, Illinois is attempting to force the President to do something he legally is not required to do. The consequence of his refusal is the threat to remove him from the ballot, a decision that would have an impact on his ability to conduct his campaign. What would be the next step? Barring the President or his campaign organization from entering the State? As a US citizen who meets the Constitutional qualifications to run for President, the threat to bar him from the ballot is a threat to deprive him of this civil rights.

Illinois is holding out for a federal bailout. They should go back to being a territory. Then, they get no vote in congress, and can’t vote in presidential elections.

Trump won’t win Illinois anyway, so who cares?

I care. Just suppose they sign this into law, followed by every other democrat controlled state out there doing the same. If it goes to the Supreme Court, along with the laws passed in those same state allotting their electoral college votes to go to the winner of the popular vote, we are already in a hole 4 liberal justice votes. While I can see that the Illinois law will be thrown out, not so sure about the electoral college votes going to the popular vote winner. All it takes is one more vote, Roberts anyone, and this garbage stands. So if we don't care, and allow the "show me your taxes" bill to stand, and Trump is not on the ballot in those states, then the dems get 97%ish of the votes in those states, and shazam, welcome to a democrat president for the foreseeable future.

So, yea, I care.

What needed to be done was when Mrs. O’Leary’s cow Started the Great Chicago Fire, it shouldn’t have been rebuilt. The cow know that Chicago was a Sh_thole, that is why she knocked over the lantern...

And surely they realize they’ll be going hat-in-hand to DC for a bailout sooner rather than later—probably much sooner than they anticipate—and it *might* help to have NOT pissed off the King beforehand....

Any major Wall Street or debt crisis will bring not only bring Illinois to bankruptcy, but also NY State/NY City, California, and probably many large public pension funds as well - all at the same time.

Events will get ahead of anyone’s ability to manage them, and it will be like a stampede for the exits in a building on fire.

The ONLY response will be vast amounts of money printing and Fed.gov debt to cover the major problems. Some reform will be forced on corrupt blue-state governments, but the calls for socialism will grow a lot stronger and politics will get even uglier.

I’m not optimistic.

“It won’t be pretty”

Yes -- but watch what happens when they can't pay their bills, their pension funds collapse, and no one wants to buy their debt. It will be difficult to tell the difference.

Yup. As a certain permabear blogger from Florida likes to say, math doesn’t care about man-made “laws”.

” It will be difficult to tell the difference.”

theoretically, it would be WAY WAY worse than if the protection of a bankruptcy court was available to them ... without that, their inability to pay their bills, repay their bonds, pay their entitlements, and pay their pensions would likely result in total chaos ...

But expecting anyone to prove their identity or legal citizenship to vote is “racist.”

Yes, good point.

You can “war-game” a scenario in Chicago / Illinois where an economic downturn causes tax collection to drop significantly, causes large losses in poorly managed pensions, and financially blows-up state-run entities like, hospitals, toll roads, airports, etc... (also revealing deep corruption and mismanagement ).

If the solution isn’t bankruptcy, it then becomes entirely political - and judicial. Can you imagine what it would like having people like Kimm Foxx, Lori Lightfoot, Mike Madigan, Jesse Jackson, Rahm Emanuel etc... trying to manage cuts in services, selling new debt, and massively raising taxes? It would be utter chaos.
