Charging Assange reflects dramatic shift in US approach

The decision to seek the extradition of Julian Assange marked a dramatic new approach to the founder of WikiLeaks by the U.S. government, a shift that was signaled in the early days of the Trump administration. President Barack Obama’s Justice Department had extensive internal debates about whether to charge Assange amid concerns the case might not hold up in court and would be viewed as an attack on journalism by an administration already taking heat for leak prosecutions.

But senior Trump administration officials seemed to make clear early on that they held a different view, dialing up the rhetoric on the anti-secrecy organization shortly after it made damaging disclosures about the CIA’s cyberespionage tools.

“WikiLeaks walks like a hostile intelligence service and talks like a hostile intelligence service,” former CIA Director Mike Pompeo said in April 2017 in his first public speech as head of the agency.

“Assange and his ilk,” Pompeo said, seek “personal self-aggrandizement through the destruction of Western values.”

The administration won’t say why they decided now to charge Assange with a single count of computer intrusion conspiracy that dates to 2010. Back then, WikiLeaks is alleged to have helped Chelsea Manning, then a U.S. Army intelligence analyst, crack a password that gave her higher-level access to classified computer networks.

Chelsea Manning . Once a him, now a her. I for one would like to see this stated that way. Alternatively give his former name and now name so people understand this is not a natural born “ women”

If you want to make this choice, so be it, that’s you right. I’ll honor that, but don’t do a kabuki theater on me about your past.....

I was quoting the article.

I am well aware of Bradley/Chelsea Manning.

AP thinks Trump should have continued to mismanage the Government by continuing the policies of Obola.

The army had no business giving a security clearance to Manning. It’s like the border wall. Prevention is worth a pound of cure. Now she’s a hero. In the case of Assange I think Trump will use him to spill the beans on Obama.

Why waste time with Assange when Comey, Strzok, Page, Clapper, Yates, Ohr, and unamed co-conspirators are at the head of the line? Assanage is a waste of time and a distraction.

I doubt the US will win in getting Assuage extradited to the US....Assauge can keep this going in the courts for years. He’s Australian as well, and no doubt he knows quite well how the US operates going after ‘their man’ legally and otherwise to put up a fierce enough fight.

I cannot get past the point that Assange published stuff that compromised sources and endangered our troops. He is a hacker more than a journalist IMO.

OTOH - how is what he did (publishing material) any different than what the NYT and other media outlets did with classified information here in the U.S.?

It will be an interesting legal case.

Well they’ve yet to prove he himself was a hacker.....other people generally just gave him information which he ‘published’.....the same way Journalists operate.

Likely they’ll make it an issue of if or not he would be considered a Journalist.

Proper grammar with respect to execution is always “hanged”.

I agree, regardless of the words used.

Cyberespionage tools indeed. It was a set of tools designed to make a computer hack look like it came from a nation that did not do it. This is like a cop planting cocaine in someone’s back seat. There is no legitimate purpose for this.

“western values” my foot Pompeo. Is it western values to spy on every american’s phone calls , emails and text without probable cause. Assange is an American Hero. We will put millions in the streets supporting this great man. We dont care if he published truth that DNC emails showed they screwed Bernie Sanders. Where is the crime in that? This bogus hacking charge will be thrown out in England!! What then Pompeo?

“He is a hacker more than a journalist IMO.”

A hacker hacks; he didn’t. He received info that others had hacked, just like, as you mentioned, media outlets do every day of the week as “journalists”.
