U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, a Massachusetts Democrat running for president in 2020, delivered donuts and coffee to picketing Stop & Shop workers in Somerville on Friday, and urged shoppers to take their business elsewhere.
Do not cross the picket line, Warren said. Understand people on the picket line are not just fighting for their families. Theyre fighting for all our families. Theyre fighting for basic fairness and equality in this country.
On Thursday, the unions representing 31,000 Stop & Shop workers across Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut voted to go on strike. Their contract expired in February, and they have been unable to reach a deal on a new one.
...
Speaking to reporters, Warren reiterated the message that she has been campaigning on for years, that the wealthy are taking advantage of the working class. This is the problem all across this country is that those at the top think that they can just keep sucking out every bit of profit and leave nothing for the working people, the people who actually get out there and make it happen every day, Warren said.
What people are asking for here is theyre just asking for fair wages, theyre asking for health care benefits and just as shot at a decent retirement, she said.
A&P used to have the best coffee that you ground yourself in the store.
Bribing Voters with Coffee and Donuts.
I assume she paid for the food and drink using her own Money, right?
Majority are located in in CT, RI and Eastern/western MA and the rest in parts on NJ and NYC area. This dispute is with the MA, CT and RI stores. Not sure on the exact number, but maybe 350 ish stores total.
I’ve read similar stories too. Didn’t matter if you were just about to hit “YES” to confirm the amount of you order at the register, they told you to get out. I can guarantee they will loose customers over this, which means less sales, then less hours, then less jobs.
I’m not sure how many stores A&P had, I know it was over 15,000.
Shop-n-Chop should go that route. A grape boycott would help.

“What the frick else do they want for stocking shelves, pushing cash register buttons and making change, and presumably serving food?”
Massive automation is on the way. It might take a while but it’s coming and over time it will eliminate many of these types of jobs. As a society we will have a BIG problem with massive unemployment of people without job skills.
In the meantime we are importing massive numbers of illegal aliens with low job skills. Train wreck ahead.
I’m reminded of the strike the UFCW did in CA back in 2003-2004. They were out for 4 or 5 months over supermarket jobs. When the dust settled the stores remained but numerous people lost houses, cars, etc when they defaulted on loans.
Seriously.
’ I'm gunna get me a beer beverage! ‘
Market Basket in non-union.
Some of the workers I have known or met are outright hostile to the ideas of unions. The workers really like the owner and he takes good care of them.
Excellent prices and on the weekends - forget it, it’s jammed with a billion shoppers.
We see it now with self-scans, check-in kiosk at airports, etc. The Unions are actively accelerating that with demands for employer funded pensions for PT cashiers, nearly 100% employer funded insurance, etc.
They should be promoting skilled blue-collar jobs such as electricians, plumbers, forklift mechanics, etc. not rewarding entry-level jobs for life.
But, you done learnt somethin’ huh?! LOL!
Begin non-union I would imagine they get raises/bonuses based on individual and store performance, a team of co-workers who work tougher and where the dead weight is removed. They know in a Union you all get mediocre raises, can’t fire dead weight, and are forced to pay union dues.
Sort of like Hostess Twinkies and the bakers union? DOH! But, glad the company is back in business.
Braniff?
Ooooh, fresh fish tonight!
Yeah, I think I was about 19 then, but knew within a couple years how unions were destroying the companies they worked for.
They’re not being exploited. Unions give big bucks to dems. That’s why Big White Squaw is there.
Obama & Co told them to keep striking, and not accept any counter-offers, effectively destroying the company.
Obama said he'd provide funds allocated for "employees hurt by international competition..." if the company went under.
Can't remember the specific name of that particular program.
Here in N Nevada, it is called “Whole Paycheck”.
