A military intervention to oust Venezuelan strongman Nicolás Maduro remains a very serious option for the United States, according to President Trumps national security team.
Obviously, thats a result that no one would like to see but clearly one that is seriously considered as events unfold, a senior administration official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told reporters Friday evening.

This is going to be a fun thread. It will be indistinguishable from DU in many places.
This should not be on the table. I believe that any further military intervention by US troops should be severely restricted. A rather narrow view should be taken of when it is necessary to the security and defense of the U.S. and her allies.
No. Do you really believe it will begin and end with just air cover?
Beautiful, sweet Diana!
You’re so kind. You have me crying!
Now that China and Russia are putting troops in Venezuela to bolster Maduro sadly it may force Trumps hand.
Why? Why do we care whether the guy who won the election gets to stay, or whether the guy who lost is installed in his place ? When did Congress declare a war against the president of Venezuala? When was the Constitutions requirement for a declaration of war by Congress, repealed?
Since we are trillions in debt and yearly deficits, any new government initiative requires borrowing. Why should we borrow from China to fight China in Venezuala?
When did Americas roads and bridges get fixed, allowing us to focus on distant countries instead of our own? The highways in my region are still covered with potholes!!
Lets borrow money from China to invade Venezuala? Sounds like a good idea, right
Ill support Trumps decisiin
Except the Constitution says its Congresss decision. A single man (or woman) isnt supposed to have the power to declare war and send our young people to die in distant lands. When did Congress declare war on Venezuala?
. It will be indistinguishable from DU in many places.
What does that mean? Its the Democrats who have the greatest record of getting us into foreign wars to pursue paternalistic missions. Ever heard of Wilson? LBJ? Obama and Libya?
Save your venom for the real enemies.
My Dad was a disabled vet from Wilson’s WWI.
I saw LBJ get us into the bottomless pit and lost friends in that miserable Deep State war. He set up our sailors and NavSec group people with the Liberty attack and seizure of the Pueblo. The Gulf of Tonkin on the second day didn’t happen the way LBJ lied to Congress about.
“Chicolini here may look like n idiot and sound like an idiot and act like an idiot, but don’t let that fool you. He really is an idiot.”
LOL
Because I don’t want a Russian mi!itary base in Venezuela or the Chinese and Russians getting control of the biggest oil producer in SA. Neither should you.
It likely will not come to armed conflict. This is sabre rattling to support the efforts of Venezuela’s lawful, constitutional national assembly to rid themselves of a tyrant that circumvented the Venezuelan constitution to get elected.
Is the Monroe Doctrine still the policy of the land?
I understand that China and Russia is there for the oil. Is that a big deal for us? But do we really want Russian or Chinese Naval facilities on our Southern Flank?
None of these are easy decisions. But either we defend the Hemisphere, or we do not.
Its a matter of making our policy clear. Cuban troops are one thing—they are intra-hemisphere. Russian and Chinese troops are not.
If another country intervened in the US to install a losing presidential candidate - eg Hillary - would you consider it an act of war? When did Congress declare war on Venezuela? Or is provision of the Constitution no longer worth following? If so, what other provisions of the Constitution should be treated as dead letters?
Is the Monroe Doctrine still the policy of the land?
Is the requirement for a congressional declaration or war still in the Constitution?
You are a stickler for details! Ha Ha.
Its called the Monroe Doctrine. Get over it.
The Constitution requires a declaration of war by Congress. Whether the war is to enforce the Monroe doctrine or to defeat Hirohito. Get over it
Were you this upset when JFK barricaded the gulf to keep the Russians from bringing more missiles into Cuba and went to the brink of nuclear war to get the Russians and their missiles out of Cuba.
Were you this upset when Reagan sent our boys to shag the Cubans out of Grenada?
Get over it.
So you dont think we need to follow the Constitution. Ok, youve made your point, thanks
