The headline of Jonathan Zimmerman's article in the Washington Post, "How Trump finally turned Republicans against McCarthyism," alerted me to the possibility that Zimmerman has never spoken to a Republican in the wild.
The subhead, "After nearly 70 years, Republicans have stopped defending Joe McCarthy," confirmed my suspicions. Zimmerman insists that the "new consensus" among Republicans is that "McCarthyism was, in fact, a massive, unpardonable assault on freedom, fairness and the rule of law." This is nuts. In reality, McCarthy's status among Republicans is higher now than it has been since his untimely death in 1957.

First Amendment rights in "a country"? Is this like asking if they have a fourth of July in France?
It was a hounding campaign that blacklisted people whose association with communist thought was as little as a club in college. It wasn't for America's glory, it was for Joe's. And now you all are taking it for yours.
I should say... for God’s glory in America. Because that’s the thing that really counts.
Why would America buy into secular Marxism in the first place? It’s because bit by bit it lost belief in something better, something from heaven. There was less and less there to shut secular Marxism out. Calling McCarthy a “hero” is like praising Band-Aid for saving lives (which it typically can’t).
America will win, or lose, on its knees.
The concept of rights is vacant absent a belief in God. The theology which was commonly understood in America in the founding era which makes the Declaration of Independence and its certain rights coherent is valid everywhere or nowhere. If it is disregarded elsewhere - or, Heaven forefend, here - that does not mean that they are invalid anywhere. The principle of American polity is that they do wrong who disregard those rights - whoso and wheresoever they be. Which is not to say that America, as a prudential matter, should necessarily try to enforce foreigners rights in foreign countries. Only that in principle America regards foreigners as having those rights.
The topic was what Senator McCarthy personally did wrong. In historical retrospect - as many suspected at the time - Senator McCarthy only attacked people who were guilty as charged.
I reply to you specifically so I can follow that link...thank you..
Zimmerman is a leftist hack professor. If he had been somewhat balanced in his article, he would have mentioned the late Stan Evans very detailed book about Sen. McCarthy and what he found about communists in the government. His book is entitled “Blacklisted by History”.
McCarthy was an SOB and nasty, but much of his information was accurate, something Zimmerman and his ilk refuse to acknowledge. Mentioning Schrecker’s name as a legitimate historian is like calling Joseph Goebbel’s a “Pulitzer Prize quality writer. She’s so red that even other reds are embarrassed by her fanatical covering up of communists in the US government and the various industries, including the entertainment industry.
I knew Stan for decades and he was a studious man. He spent about 10 years working on “Blacklisted by History” and I once helped him to understand the significance (temporal) of document which did contain the names of identified Communists/spies in the US government. It helped to explain the varying numbers Cohen/McCarthy gave out as to how many reds were “in” the US government ( but they were spread over a significant period of time regarding the pre-WW2 and WW2 era government, not so much in the post WW2 period (starting around 1947 or so), something many so-called scholars never picked up on).
As a student of communism, I give prof. Zimmerman an “F” for honesty.
Judas was on Jesus’ side too - until he wasn’t.
Sorry for the delay in responding, I went to bed.
Your comments in the thread, to me at least, have been obtuse and vague with respect to the discussion at hand. You seem to be critical of McCarthy, but not of those Communist witches that actually were found and did exist. It’s perilously close to repeating the media narrative that these were all “innocents”, when they most certainly weren’t.
The left had a vitriolic hate of Nixon and his anti-Communist beliefs...and were waiting for the right moment to take him down.
Agreed. The Republicans were actually two parties, the West Coast Republicans, Goldwater, Nixon, Reagan, and the East Coast Republicans, Rockefellers, Bushes, and I'd throw George Romney in there, even though he was from Michigan..
The East Coast Republicans were the uniparty/CIA/Rinos. The West Coast Republicans were the small government, stay out of other people's business types. The West Coast Republicans always tried to forge a peace with the East Coast, and the East Coast always tried to destroy the West Coast.
John and Bobby Kennedy weren't perfect, but they were the only Democrats of my lifetime that were worth a flip, so we saw what happened to them.
huh...?
That is the stupidest comment I’ve heard on here.
Are you comparing Ann Coulter to Judas?
What the F is wrong with you?
All she did was point out the Kings new clothes weren't real. No one can harm Trump but Trump. Coulter has absolutely no power to do anything but inform or misinform, the President on the other hand seems to have no power at all according to all the turd polishers that try to alibi every inaction by the President.
He is going to release the FISA docs, uh maybe.
He is building the wall every day, well not really he is actually only patching existing wall.
He is closing the border this week or maybe next year.
He sent the military to the border to control borer crossers, well not really.
He just doubled the number of HB2 visas, yes really.
In spite of all that he is the best President in my lifetime and I want him to succeed, but he can't succeed if you guys make him believe he already has.
I understand — the communist ideological menace was a real one. But it was a menace that played to willingness to believe. I believe that when the Knights of Columbus successfully petitioned Congress to put “In God We Trust” on our money, that was poised to do more good than the HUAC activities, inasmuch as people noticed. However, the response was half hearted. America was already coming down with the disease, and that by its own free will. And that’s the dread possibility in a land where its constitution starts out “We The People.” “The People” can choose whatever they want by their own free will, and the result, if they choose something else, will be a constitutional construal that looks far from the original one.
America said it was going to trust in God. God calmly took that at face value, and when it failed to, it suffered bad consequences.
But anyhow that was then, and we are where we are. Now God continues to address the land, even through the President and Vice President now. Will America by and large say yes? The Holy Spirit is quite large enough to confirm it if it does.
The Communist ideological menace is still an ever-present threat. Unfortunately, we were started down the primrose path of Socialism in the 19th century. Some, like William Jennings Bryan, tried to marry it as a Christian Socialist agenda (which is a contradiction in terms), but those that took over the Democrat Party back in 1896, simply wanted to purge it of sensible Conservative Bourbons (the last non-leftist Democrat President was Grover Cleveland, who was reviled by the growing leftist base of the party by 1896).
Of course, that Christian bit was out the window before long. Even Bryan spent his last days here in Tennessee defending Christianity in schools as the left was looking to purge it (Scopes). He “technically” won the fight, but was a pyrrhic victory.
As for “HUAC” (itself a pejorative), I call it HCUA, it has a curious history, to be sure. It was used for a time to root out Nazis (as they were competing with the Soviets as another ultraleft totalitarian ideology). Samuel Dickstein, a leftist Congressman from NYC, was a paid Soviet agent, and was heavily involved with the committee (he ducked out on assuming full command of the chairmanship, lest someone discover the fact that he was doing the bidding of the Kremlin).
Because the Democrats were the majority for most of the period of its existence, it is singularly curious and hysterical how Republicans (and McCarthy) get the “blame” for it. Especially so when McCarthy was a Senator and not a House member (HCUA is a House Committee), and he only served in a Senate with a GOP majority from 1947-49 and 1953-54 (indeed, he was only a freshman member, right off of defeating Bob La Follette, Jr., scion of the leftist Progressive Republicans, in 1946). He wasn’t really known to the public until his February 1950 Wheeling Speech and served as a Senate Chairman for barely two years (Gov’t Operations).
From the media hysteria and the rest, you’d have thought he was Dictator of America for 20 years, sending millions to the gulags and taking their jobs. He merely aired what was already known privately, and should’ve been told to the public, that there was extensive Communist and leftist-sympathizers in government, education and entertainment institutions and other bodies. It was a slow, systematic boil of our country.
I would say for that brief, shining moment, it was a glorious time when the left had to go running like the Satanic vermin that they are, made to feel precisely the way WE have felt since the 1960s, as they have waged war against us when they were able to successfully vilify McCarthy. That evil should’ve been exposed and fully excised like a cancer. Sadly, it hasn’t been, and the forces of darkness have marched onwards with little interruption.
I’m in absolute agreement with you that we must get back to God. This Republic (not a democracy) is only meant for a moral, Godly populace. When it ceases to be, we have lost the country. We may require another revolution or civil war to restore this nation to its proper place and standing. Eternal vigilance is the only prescription for our nation. As was pointed out, we’re always only a generation away from losing it all.
Even Bryan spent his last days here in Tennessee defending Christianity in schools as the left was looking to purge it (Scopes).
The whole thing was an exercise in putting Dayton on the map.
We shouldn’t be defining for God where His hand has to go in order to get a faith revolution, though there seem to be some signs such as Donald Trump and Mike Pence. They are bully pulpits for the good, which is in accordance with one of the government roles of Romans 11. Trump is the more remarkable witness as he has never been a churchman in his whole life, and if anything quite often the playboy. But he got a vision, and the church steeple was prominent in it.
Anyhow, it just seemed a tad cruel to me to figuratively quarantine people who HAD measles (i.e. those who had flirted with inimical philosophies) along with people who HAVE measles (i.e. those openly selling such philosophies now). In fact the entire Christian approach is not ad hominem, but towards the soul before God. Anyone willing can be washed and cleansed.
I do not like the idea of trying to put Christianity behind socialism. That’s going to effectively try to enthrone venal politics in the incorruptible seat of God. The way FDR got support from pulpits for Social Security seems an example. Can God use it? Yes. Perhaps especially where churches were falling down on charity mindedness in the gospel. Are there better arrangements? Yes. Are there political dangers to gaming it? Yes, yes, yes.
But that is precisely where it was going. That’s why the Communist ACLU was 100% behind it. Once they got the foot in the door, it was a pretext to purge biblical standards in schools. Mission accomplished.
We arent. She, however, is giving ammunition to the enemy
He’s placed orders with the tailors, which is more than any other president in recent memory has — there’s only so much that can be done under the American model with an unwilling populace.
