Starting this week, companies are now required to charge you if you live in California.

If you order something online from merchants with a brick-and-mortar store in California like Target or Kohls, consumers pay California sales tax. But buying something online from stores that don’t have an actual store in California, until now, didn’t charge a sales tax.

California has now closed that loophole.

The state law changed on April 1. Now, it doesn’t matter if an out-of-state company has a real store in California or not, online transactions

More and more sellers have been adding Ohio sales taxes even if they don't have an Ohio location. Interesting, Amazon will collect for its own merchandise but third party sellers (outside of Ohio) on Amazon don't have a sales tax...for now.

I think Washington state has been doing this for several years.

I bought a Dell computer on line in 2017 and paid full Washington state sales tax.

What's the next move?

We pay full sales tax for BOTH states involved?

I believe a USSC ruling last yr made this possible. I now live in SC and questioned sales tax being added to an on line purchase from a co. which hadn’t previously charged me. They said a recent law required this be done if State requested.

Anything they can do to remove money from the private sector, seems to be the goal. No, not good...

That has been the sales tax policy in Tennessee since the beginning. If you buy on line and the vendor does not collect the tax, the purchaser ust pay. It is called use tax Businisses can and are audited for compliance.

the policy was implemented to collect tax on out of state orders by telephone

I looked into the proposal and it is 20C per gallon and 1.3% adjusted for inflation on top of that.

BAH! I mis-stated it, here is the proposal:
Under the proposal from Walz and House Democrats, the state gas tax would increase from its current 28.5 cents per gallon to 48.5 cents, with an estimated 1.3-cent-per-gallon increase after that, based on inflation. Other driving-related fees would go up, while sales taxes would increase for metro residents to pay for better transit.
