If President Trump follows through with his threat to close the Southern Border with Mexico this week, say goodbye to your avocado toast.
A top distributor and grower of avocados has warned that the U.S. would run out of the fruit in three weeks if imports from Mexico are halted amid any possible border shutdown.
You couldnt pick a worse time of year because Mexico supplies virtually 100 percent of the avocados in the U.S. right now," Steve Barnard, president and chief executive of Mission Produce, told Reuters. "California is just starting and they have a very small crop, but theyre not relevant right now and wont be for another month or so."
It wouldn't just be the ripe fruit affected by any potential disruption in trade. Nearly half of all imported U.S. vegetables and 40 percent of imported fruit are grown in Mexico, according to data from the United States Department of Agriculture reviewed by Reuters.
But the growth and popularity of avocados as a healthy dietary choice may catch the attention of Americans if there's any large-scale disruption.

Idea certainly has merit LOL wish it was my idea...
wetgundog Post #18 came up with the plan :)
Avocados used to be called “the poor man’s butter.” If millenials only knew that, they would go back to buttered croissants like civilized people.
We will figure out how to grow Mexicans in a lab - that way well have strict control over how many are here
fine by me. I hate avocados.
That place in Austin will have to kick it up a notch.
Do Mexican guacamole makers have enough reserve capacity to process the whole avocado crop? I doubt it.
Thanks.
Hipsters hardest hit. (Not that such a thing bothers me any.)
Affected people can always get some “avocados” from Beto’s kid.
My wife likes avocados - says she would not suffer if they suddenly disappeared and never came back....in fact it’s a trade she is willing and eager to make if no avocados means no more flood of illegal invaders...
We have an avocado tree. We’re very popular. lol
I remember Iran pistachios. They were dyed pink so we knew where they came from. Left your hands and mouth pink. I love pistachios and the white homegrown ones are so much better. I have an avocado tree. I’ll survive.
Here’s an interesting thing about the products that were talking about. And supply and demand.
Produce has a short growing season. If the supply of cheap Mexican produce were to stop, the ability of farmers in this country to ramp up produce production would increase very quickly. I think given a couple of years, except for exotic stuff, we’d produce all the produce we needed.
Actually sounds as a good substitute. Thanks
What’s an avocado? Never ate one, never want one, who cares!
What makes me mad is how stupid they thing we are.
Robert Francis O’Rourke has a substitute idea.
If that ain't a white people problem, I don't know what is.
Caramba ! Cinco de Mayo parties threatened !!! Film at 11 !!
