Brexit: Parliament again fails to agree on how to leave the E.U., as deadline looms

"There are no ideal choices available and there are very good arguments against any possible outcome at the moment," said one lawmaker

LONDON — Britain's Parliament still can't agree on how to move forward on Brexit.

Four nonbinding measures that would have outlined a potential way forward on exiting the European Union all failed to gain a majority Monday.

The vote came after lawmakers last week rejected a withdrawal agreement proposed by Prime Minister Theresa May for a third time. Two of these votes were the largest and fourth largest losses in parliamentary history. Despite these defeats, May is reportedly considering putting her deal up for yet another vote in Parliament this week.

The options Parliament considered Monday included two proposals that aimed to retain close economic ties between Britain and the European Union. One would have kept the U.K. in a customs union for goods with the E.U. after Brexit, while another called for Britain to stay in the bloc's single market for both goods and services.

Another option wanted any Brexit deal to be submitted to a public referendum, and the fourth said Britain should cancel its departure from the E.U. if it comes within two days of crashing out of the bloc without an agreement.

Prime Minister Theresa May has said that she would step down if Parliament passes the deal she negotiated with the E.U.

NIGEL FARAGE has warned Prime Minister Theresa May’s decision to ask the European Union for a longer extension to Article 50 will lead Britain “deeper into crisis”.

On this I agree with Farage (surprise, surprise!) - the EU should not allow any extension beyond May 7. Post May 7 then the UK must participate in EU parliamentary elections as per EU law. If the UK is to postpone beyond May 7 then Brexit MUST be postponed to 2024 (before the next EU parliamentary elections) and the EU would prefer not to have the UK onboard.

Here’s hoping Macron vetos and says April 12 - Out les anglais!

It seems to me that May has no shame and has totally reneged on her promise to honor the principle of “leave means leave.” It seems to me further that she has carried this idea of kowtowing to labour in her back pocket since the beginning. This sounds to me as if it is the essence of her more recent past statement to the effect that it boils down to her deal or no brexit at all, with the addition that she is in effect becoming the catalyst for no brexit at all. And how will a further delay work? Is part of a further delay involving snap MEP elections in the UK? And does not having MEP elections imply full continued partnership in the EU for the forseeable near term future— something that could have and should have been forseen and avoided or warned about by Government months if not years ago? And if UK MEP elections are not held— isn’t this a form of treason, handing over sovereignty to a foreign power without even the pretense of a struggle? IIRC, Farage has been proclaiming that the process is being guided towards indefinitely staying in the EU— I am beginning to share his pessimism...

She has no shame

And no plan. She makes it up as she goes .

Reaching out to Labour is desperation. Desperation to stay in power. Boris Johnson would do the same.

A further delay will not work and the EU doesn’t want them to stay lest their chaos causes more problems

If UK MEP elections are held it is not “handing control to a foreign power” rather it is “participating in the decision making process that affects millions” and the EU doesn’t want a leaving state to make decisions that will affect others after they have gone.
