U.S. ending aid to El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras over migrants

Trump has claimed that the countries had "set up" caravans of migrants in order to export them into the United States

The United States is cutting off aid to El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras, known collectively as the "Northern Triangle," the State Department said on Saturday, a day after President Donald Trump blasted the Central American countries for sending migrants to the United States.

"We are carrying out the President's direction and ending FY (fiscal year) 2017 and FY 2018 foreign assistance programs for the Northern Triangle," a State Department spokesperson said in a statement. The department declined to provide further details.

The State Department said it would "engage Congress in the process," an apparent acknowledgement that it will need lawmakers' approval to end the funding.

A U.S. House Appropriations Committee aide estimated that around $700 million of aid was affected.

Democratic Representative Nita Lowey, who chairs the committee, tweeted that the move to cut aid was "immoral and more likely to deteriorate conditions that push people into the kind of poverty and despair that exacerbates migration."

New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez, the top Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, called Trump's order a "reckless announcement" and urged Democrats and Republicans alike to reject it.

"U.S. foreign assistance is not charity; it advances our strategic interests and funds initiatives that protect American citizens," Menendez said in a statement.

Trump claimed on Friday during a trip to Florida that the countries had "set up" caravans of migrants in order to export them into the United States. A surge of asylum seekers from the three countries have sought to enter the United States across its southern border in recent days.

"We were giving them $500 million. We were paying them tremendous amounts of money, and we're not paying them anymore

A reminder that the democrats won the House in November, which means the voters are fine with the way things are.

Correct. Losing the House last November was a disaster on so many levels, not the least of which is the coming FY20 budget.

Some people shrugged it off, "Hey! We kept control of the Senate." That's true. And we lost the House.

The Deep State Department is very upset about this.

The President proposed last year to cut the State Dept by 25%, and Congress rejected that in the final budget. For FY20, Trump is proposing the same thing, and Congress will reject it.

Ask yourself: what does the State Dept really and actually do for the American people?

A not so dirty little secret is that DOS doesn't do that much tangible work for America, and actually works against the American people. 95-98% of the political donations by DOS employees go to Democrats. DOS has been also been full of outright Communists for decades. Today, we call them "Globalists."

In 1969, I had the privelege to watch the U.S.S. New Jersey bombard the coast of the R.V.N. with her 16 inch guns

Wow. And thanks for your service veteran!

I don’t blame the people for going

I actually do blame them. I blame the vast majority of them.

They are coming here for "freebies" and to live off the backs of the hard working Americans who are being taxed at the local, state, and Federal level to provide these "services" that motivate these invaders to invade us.

Nita Lowey sez “the move to cut aid was “immoral and more likely to deteriorate conditions that push people into the kind of poverty and despair that exacerbates migration.”

No Nita, what’s immoral and likely to deteriorate conditions in these countries is our Congress sustaining the status quo of actions of both parties. Past actions have done nothing but allow, if not engender, the very situation you cry media-interview tears for. Shut Down the border. In tandem, cease remittances to at least Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras. And monitor remittances to other countries that may be used as a cutout to denied countries. If that happens, add them to the denied list.

Calling to mind that there are more oppressed than oppressors, instead of heading El Norte, citizens of Sal, Guate and Honduras will do well to think of Solzhenitsyn writing: “And how we burned in the camps later, thinking: What would things have been like if every security operative, when going out to make an arrest, had been uncertain whether he would return alive and had to say good-bye to his family?....” It’s well past time the US rethink who we support in areas like the Americas.

So, if I understand the article correctly, this has to get congressional approval. That’s not going to happen. Democrats aren’t going to approve anything.

Not exactly.

From the article:

"We are carrying out the President's direction and ending FY (fiscal year) 2017 and FY 2018 foreign assistance programs for the Northern Triangle," a State Department spokesperson said in a statement. The department declined to provide further details

That is a confusing statement from DOS, because FY17 and FY18 are long gone. We are currently in FY19.

Funds have to be expended by the end of the FY, or you lose them. However, it appears that "foreign aid" is a special case where the funds can continue be spent for previous FYs (at least according to DOS).

The President would have to have Congressional approval to decrease or eliminate foreign aid for specific countries for FY20, which is the next budget. We lost the House, so that won't happen. But it appears Trump is able to stop spending on current allocated monies.

My take. I could be mistaken.

I’m sure our money goes directly to leftist organizations directly involved in organizing this mass exodus. The same people in charge of the banana republic schemes our tax money perpetually maintains. Without our money, they’d have a chance to throw out the cleptocrats and finally have representative governments.

ob Menendez, the top Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, called Trump’s order a “reckless announcement” >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

For too long the USA has propped up the political classes in Guatemala and Hoduras, making them wealthy beyondimagining as their respective nations rot.

“Aid” to these countries should have ended long ago, but Senators like Menendez and others like to visit so they can sample the Honduran and Guatemalan goulash,as the last of the Dem “big spenders,” just as bad as the tyrannical political class leeches that run these countries

I politely disagree.. the house was stolen with ballot harvesting. Now seceral states are preparing to make the electoral college irrelevant.
Both of these and probably more are successfully holding America hostage to large costal cities.
