Trump has claimed that the countries had "set up" caravans of migrants in order to export them into the United States
The United States is cutting off aid to El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras, known collectively as the "Northern Triangle," the State Department said on Saturday, a day after President Donald Trump blasted the Central American countries for sending migrants to the United States.
"We are carrying out the President's direction and ending FY (fiscal year) 2017 and FY 2018 foreign assistance programs for the Northern Triangle," a State Department spokesperson said in a statement. The department declined to provide further details.
The State Department said it would "engage Congress in the process," an apparent acknowledgement that it will need lawmakers' approval to end the funding.
A U.S. House Appropriations Committee aide estimated that around $700 million of aid was affected.
Democratic Representative Nita Lowey, who chairs the committee, tweeted that the move to cut aid was "immoral and more likely to deteriorate conditions that push people into the kind of poverty and despair that exacerbates migration."
New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez, the top Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, called Trump's order a "reckless announcement" and urged Democrats and Republicans alike to reject it.
"U.S. foreign assistance is not charity; it advances our strategic interests and funds initiatives that protect American citizens," Menendez said in a statement.
Trump claimed on Friday during a trip to Florida that the countries had "set up" caravans of migrants in order to export them into the United States. A surge of asylum seekers from the three countries have sought to enter the United States across its southern border in recent days.
"We were giving them $500 million. We were paying them tremendous amounts of money, and we're not paying them anymore

Foreign Aid is a massive kickback scam.
That's why Congress and left wing groups love it.
They package all the "foreign aid" into one appropriation of billions.
Tax dollars flow overseas, are washed, and the money....well, let's just say some of the dollars make it back to the U.S. To the "right people", you see.
That SOB continues to get reelected.
Corrupt NJ.
Trump gave these countries warning earlier. The problem is that there are major political forces encouraging these people to emigrate (think Soros and Cuba) and they have a lot of money to spend and a fierce determination to disrupt both Latin America and the US.
I dont blame the people for going, and I hate it when I see ugly comments on FR about the poor, stupid, manipulated people being sent up here and set up to be ugly photo ops. Theyre poor and theyre being used.
So I am glad Trump is going to hit their governments where it hurts. Maybe that will outweigh the Soros money, maybe not. But whatever, its important not to go after the migrants, but the forces behind them.
Meaning it's the right idea, way past overdue, but a complete non-starter?
In 1969, I had the privelege to watch the U.S.S. New Jersey bombard the coast of the R.V.N. with her 16 inch guns. Each high explosive projectile weighed about as much as a VW Beetle and could be shot with deadly accuracy from about 27 miles away. I guy I worked with who retired recently was a Gunner’s Mate on a DLG and he was in Beirut in the ‘80’s when the New Jersey was brought back to kill jihadis. He told me a great story about being offered TDY in Beirut from his ship to a Navy helicopter where he was a door gunner and got to wast jihadis with his machine gun. Sweet duty that was.
We never should have started sending them anything to begin with.
Much of Central America is de facto at war with us.
Yes, it is. And sadly, there seems to be no way to stop it. Just ticks me slam off!
I couldn't think of a better reason to cut the aid then, Pedo-Bob.
NOT GOOD ENOUGH, We are sending your Citizens Home is what I want to hear.

Then on June 17, 1954, what was called “Operation Wetback” began. Because political resistance was lower in California and Arizona, the roundup of aliens began there. Some 750 agents swept northward through agricultural areas with a goal of 1,000 apprehensions a day. By the end of July, over 50,000 aliens were caught in the two states. Another 488,000, fearing arrest, had fled the country.
By mid-July, the crackdown extended northward into Utah, Nevada, and Idaho, and eastward to Texas.
By September, 80,000 had been taken into custody in Texas, and an estimated 500,000 to 700,000 illegals had left the Lone Star State voluntarily.
REMITTANCE PAYMENTS are a GREAT source of REVENUE for these countries! Remittance payments to Mexico from the United States is Mexico's NUMBER 1 SOURCE OF REVENUE @ $25+ BILLION/YR!!!!
Right. Little or nothing goes to anything that would really help the people. It goes to corrupt officials and their cronies.
The Deep State Department is very upset about this.
They are effectively at war with us. Why should we give them any money?
Winning! More, please.
JoMa
Saying he will involve Congress does not mean he agrees he needs their approval. Just tell us what he said and stop spinning it.
Trump gave these countries warning earlier.

He did indeed, as he did with Mexico. Mexico lied to Trump and America and said they would stop the flow. Instead of stopping it, Mexico EXPEDITED IT and literally bussed the invaders to the American border and provided assistance to them on the trip.
CLOSE THE FRIGGIN BORDER!
Long overdue.
Why should we give them money over there if they’re all coming here?
