Turkey arrests over 60 Kurdish politicians on eve of elections

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Turkish police on Saturday conducted raids on 127 homes in Istanbul and arrested at least 53 people, pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) candidates for the city council, as the country goes to ballot boxes for nationwide local elections in less than 24 hours.

Elsewhere in the southern Sanliurfa province, police arrested 11 others campaigning for the elections, the HDP said in a statement to the public, adding the reason for arrests was not specified yet.

In the cities of Adana, Van, and Igdir, authorities reprimanded 31 party members to prisons on “terrorism-related” charges.

The current wave of now a years-long crackdown on the Kurdish opposition came days after Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu promised a large-scale operation targeting the HDP.

The party that with the support of other Kurdistani parties have fielded candidates in major Kurdish population centers where it traditionally wins most elections.

But it did not do so in Istanbul, Ankara, and Izmir where the ratio of an average of above 10 percent votes it gets can swing the results in favor of the Turkish opposition against the right-wing coalition led by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

In the HDP statement, the party’s spokesperson Ayse Acar Basaran said since they started the election campaign this year, Turkish authorities arrested 713 party members, including polling clerks.

Of those, 107 remain in detention, she said.

The total number of Kurdish party members in Turkish prisons exceeds 7,000, among them former party leaders Selahattin Demirtas, Figen Yuksekdag, a dozen lawmakers, and over 60 mayors.

Turkey local elections take place tomorrow. In Erdogan the Islamist's Turkey, if you decide you are threatened in an election you simply put the candidates and party officials in jail.

Are our Democrats capable of doing that? If not yet, I bet they are considering it. Headshake.

What is not acceptable in Venezuela or Cuba according to NATO nations must not be acceptable among a member of the alliance, which allegedly consists of democratic nations.

How we tolerate a murderous islamic dictatorship as a member of NATO is unfathomable. President Trump needs to order the closure and destruction of American military facilities in Turkey and insist that Turkey be expelled from NATO, failing which the United States will withdraw from this one-sided “alliance”. The US should have one-on-one treaties with a few key countries, which should exclude almost every country in what we used to call Western Europe.

Turkey's dictator Recep Erdogan is also a proud supporter of the Hamas terrorist government in the Gaza Strip.

The northern part of Iraq, which is where Kurds and other groups destroyed by ISIS reside, should be granted independent status. Neither the US nor the government of Iraq stopped ISIS from savaging that region. That would be a very nice buffer state to stop Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Israel from gaining territory which is not theirs. It would also be a strong neighbor for Syria, Jordan and Lebanon. Add to that it has the resources and determined population to be a valid, successful independent nation.

Turkey's 1st local elections under its autocratic institutional system is today. The issue at hand today isnt whether the elections are free & fair (they're not) but how much legitimacy the gov is willing to forego to ensure it retains power. Even autocrats need legitimacy.

We are winning!

AKP & MHP racist & expansionistic coalition will damage the whole region, but will definitely harm good and democratic Turks even more.

Today, despite harsh political conditions, people courageously go out and vote for a democratic Turkey for everyone! Peace!
