An effort led by Democrats to scrap or bypass the Electoral College and shift presidential elections to contests decided by the national popular vote has almost no chance of succeeding, guaranteeing Democrats will again have to defeat Trump in the Electoral College they lost in 2016 while winning more votes nationally.

The Electoral College places the power to elect presidents in the hands of individual states and is enshrined in the Constitution.

:...lost in 2016 while winning more votes nationally. “

If you take out the illegal votes and more importantly the anchor baby votes, then Trump wins in a land slide. Anchor babies are not American citizens and should be deported along with their criminal parents.

There was no popular vote contest in 2016 anymore than there was a swimsuit, talent or Miss Congeniality competition. There can be no national popular vote in future elections until we adopt common standards for voter registration, voter identification, vote casting, vote security, vote counting, and vote reporting.

The executive is rewarded for breadth of support, which is by design.. the founders intentionally set up a system to ensure a presedent would represent all the people not just go to populous states and ignore the rest.

Absolutely.

I was shocked they counted popular votes as early as the early 1800s.

What was the point!?!

The same as it is now??

whoever got the most votes nationwide

Do any of these proposed state laws specify HOW the "national popular vote" is to be determined, as in, WHO does the counting, HOW is the count certified and by whom, WHAT is the mechanism to audit the result and dispute the outcome (under what authority would that take place)?

Over and over, things like this remind me of the true brilliance of our Founding Fathers.

I believe the only states to sign on to the ‘interstate compact’ (which is an end-around that pesky amendment process) are states with democrat legislatures and a democrat governor—which have already been awarding their electoral votes to the democrat candidate. Yet another reason not to vote for local dems, even if they aren’t crazy.

As I have stated before, you can rest assured that it the compact ever reached 270 and went into effect, a Republican winning the ‘popular vote’ would not receive these states’ electoral votes if it were to make a difference. In the days after the November election and the December electoral college vote, these same democrat governors would call their democrat-dominated legislature into emergency session to award their states’ electoral votes to the democrat candidate that won their in their state. They have no problem changing the rules if the rules mean they lose.

They are NOT trying to amend the Constitution.
They are attempting a cute end-run whereby state legislatures merely pledge to award their state’s EVs to the winner of the popular vote.

I think what the article is saying is that every deep blue state that is likely to pass this has already done so.

I am certain that Liberals demand a ‘popular vote’ to decide the US Presidency because with that system there are MANY more (and much easier) ways for them to manipulate the voting.

That’s why the ‘popular vote’ was not initiated from the start.

Republicans can end this debate by stating one thing. “To our esteemed Democrat colleagues, we will do this. However, we propose that we do it by county. Whoever wins the popular vote in the county gets one point. Most points accumulated in the state wins the electoral votes. And we will drop all voter fraud investigations.”

Imagine winning Dallas, Houston, San Antonio and Austin by 250,000 votes and losing the state because the other 100+ counties were won by the republican candidate.

Nevada’s new Democrat Legislature is trying to make that switch.

Disgusting.

We are already a state that actually benefits from the Electoral College.

I think less than 6 million in the whole state...with an overflow of illegals in Las Vegas.

This whole movement is born of two things:

1) butt-hurt sore loserism by Leftists after 2016

And

2) the Left’s fetish for centralizing all power so as to concentrate it in fewer hands....those who know what’s best for us...by which they of course mean themselves. The Left has long wanted to reduce the sovereign states to mere administrative conveniences of imperial Washington.

They already have a way around it, award all electoral votes to the winner of the popular vote. Delaware just signed this into law https://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/local/Delaware-Changing-Way-Distributes-Electoral-College-Votes-507830801.html
