military exercises on Venezuelan soil that President Nicolas Maduro called a sign of strengthening relations. Two Russian air force planes landed in Venezuela's main airport on Saturday carrying a Russian defense official and nearly 100 troops, according to a local journalist, amid strengthening ties between Caracas and Moscow.
A flight-tracking website showed that two planes left from a Russian military airport bound for Caracas on Friday, and another flight-tracking site showed that one plane left Caracas on Sunday.
Reporter Javier Mayorca wrote on Twitter on Saturday that the first plane carried Vasily Tonkoshkurov, chief of staff of the ground forces, adding that the second was a cargo plane carrying 35 tonnes of material.

Bingo, we have a winner.
Are these actual Russian troops or throw away mercenaries?
I have a problem believing Putin would commit regular Russian forces.
I don’t know what we are going to do, or not do, but Russia ain’t giving up Venezuela. Russia thinks it needs Cuba and Cuba does indeed rely on Venezuela. They would have to give up Cuba if they give up interests in Venezuela. This is comparable to us giving up our bases in Japan. We would never do it.
I hope this doesn’t get serious. It may be time to make a serious presence in Brazil to box them in.
Did they bring their own toilet paper?
I think you are correct..a security detail to get Maduro/family and other high ranking scum out. Haven’t seen anything yet on the Colombian news..which I follow.
I believe the US and Venezuela are meeting at the present time.
It's a wait and see.
Hope they like drinking sewer water. :)
What happened to the Monroe Doctrine?
There were reports on Colombian news from Venezuelans that a lot of foreigners spoke arabic...but that can’t be verified yet.
Now that we have a friend in Brazil that is a good idea. Probably discussed when President visited.
What about the 35 tonnes of material?
Bump
Cuba?
Venezuela is tight with Iran. A lot of Hezbollah have been living in Venezuela for awhile, and Venezuela has been making them passports and papers to come to U.S.
What will the Democrat NPCs say now? Russians bad because Orange Man. Russians good because Socialism. Doesn’t really work.
Good point. If it was 35 tons....let’s see how this shakes out. Maybe I’m just too skeptical.
That would MAKE sense.
I bet the call to Putin sounded desperate!
Maduro could call in Spetnaz to tell his troops that if they decide to dare to desert, Spetnaz would hunt them and their families. They know where they live.
The Russians are there to stay. This first 100 will be the ones opening an airbase.
