Ive never seen such a nasty reaction to something so simple, honest, and sincere. Jay Leno appeared on the "Today Show" last week to discuss the importance of monitoring cholesterol. During the interview, Al Roker pivoted to ask if he missed hosting the Tonight Show. Lenos answer detailed the reasons its no longer a forum he recognizes or misses.
Now everyone HAS to know your politics When people see you as one-sided, it just makes it tough, Leno said. And look, I did it when Clinton was horny and Bush was dumb. It was just a little easier. You know, now its very serious. Id just like a bit of civility to come back.
Immediately journalists, writers, and hosts sprung into some kind of comedy crisis communications drill. Stephen Colbert was first to respond publicly to Lenos critique.
As I noted last month, Colbert stopped pretending he could entertain non-leftists and decided to peddle partisanship full time. Once again, when asked about Lenos comments Colbert didnt dispute it. In fact, he proudly embraced it.
I agree with what he said. He said it was a different time .now theres one subject, so people see your politics more when you do it now, but Im fine with that. I dont think theres anything wrong with saying this person is damaging the nation I feel seriously about whats going on in the country .Im there to make everybody feel better and know theyre not alone in that.
Thats some rib-tickling hilarity!
Does Colbert hear himself? Hes proud of a comedy/variety show people can tune into to hear him discuss why he believes the President is damaging the nation. Further, that variety/comedy shows stated goal is to make everybody feel better about whats going on and that theyre not alone.
Whos everybody? Whos they? Well, we know who. People who didnt vote for Donald Trump. Anyone who did vote Trump and happens to support his agenda can watch a syndicated re-run, I suppose.
Consider the extraordinary nature of Colberts comments.
A man hired to host a variety show on a major network has effectively declared sixty-plus million voters unwelcome to tune in. In an era of perpetual corporate panic and preoccupation not to offend - major television networks continue to openly embrace politically segregated programming as a preference.
Ive said previously its certainly their right, but its a striking departure and proves every word Jay Leno said is true. Non-Trump haters need not apply for late night.
To really drive this home, HBOs John Oliver took to his battle station and fired both barrels at Lenos review of late night.
During his Last Week Tonight monologue about the necessity - yes, necessity - of publicly shaming those with whom he disagrees, Oliver took aim at Lenos plea for civility by airing a montage of old Leno jokes from his days on The Tonight Show.
The clips were standard nineties fare. Literally, everyone told versions of the same jokes. They wrote themselves. Naughty sex jokes and puns about a grown woman and the most powerful man in the world having sex were layups.
But they werent malicious. They werent told with the goal of seeing Clinton run out of office or framed as if he posed some great threat to the nation.
Thats the key distinction from then to now.
Remember, Leno even said last week in the offending interview it was an easier time when Clinton was horny and Bush was dumb. He wasnt denying he told sex and dumb guy jokes.
Still, Oliver beat his chest with the righteous indignation one must display for authenticity and applause in todays wokeness where gown women who diddle the President are victims, not sluts.
Those jokes have not dated well in any sense of the word, and theyre pretty rough, Oliver ranted, especially coming from a guy who just this week complained about late-night TV, saying hed like to see a bit of civility come back, you know, like that time when he did a bit with a fake book about Lewinsky titled The Slut in the Hat.
Oliver concluded, if thats what he means by civility, may I offer my new book, Oh the places you can go to f--k yourself, Jay Leno! Look how civil this is!
The rage makes your sides hurt from laughing, doesnt it? Once again, do they hear themselves proving the point?
If Oliver watched the entirety of Lenos comments on Today hed know Leno went on to say how tough he thinks the job of joking about the President is now because Trump is already such an outsized political figure.
Seeming to empathize and somewhat excuse the lack of good-natured, goodwill in the punch lines among the current crop of late night hosts, Leno concluded, How do you get more outrageous than that? (The president with a porn star).
While I dont agree with Lenos assessment any more than those who used to say there was nothing funny about Barack Obama, the broader point remains.
It didnt use to be a prerequisite to wear your politics on your sleeve to joke about politicians. Nor was it required to be a regular reader of the New Yorker to qualify as a joke teller.
Thats not the case today. Late night hosts feel a duty to weaponize their shows with the belief they are helping to actively defeat a president while boosting his opposition. At the same time, they believe theyre providing a safe space for those who cant bring themselves to function in Trumps America.
Thats heavy. Thats hostile. Thats a mission. Thats a campaign. Thats not comedy. Lenos right.
Thats very serious.
Colbert is an ass,a DNC puppet, an outlet for the liberal aganda who’s time slots are booked to appear nightly. It’s NBC’s FREE ticket to the DNC to push their agenda
Late Night TV is for those “unwilling to work”.
Somebody just buy the rights to Johnny Carson.
Reruns of the Tonight Show I would happily stay up to watch.
Carson was worth it. :-)
Late night’s real problem: Gutlessness.
The current crop? No thanks,my time is better spent rearranging my sock drawer.
Antenna TV has Carson reruns at 10 PM Eastern. There were very few things funnier than a Carson monologue.
Well, the downside of that is that the only channel that would be interested would be The Old Geezer Channel. But the upside is that old geezers are the ones who buy BMWs and vacation in Europe...so they wouldn't have trouble finding advertisers.
I do agree. If you had ten years of Johnny Carson and ran it against ‘the big boys’...you’d probably take 20-percent of the audience. Heck, it might even grow to a third of all viewers for the time-slot.
Pffttt.... I haven’t watched since Carson. They can all go screw themselves. Most have no clue what real life is like. Instead, they preach to self-absorbed, baby-killing salt pillars.
I quit watching late night after Carson. The new format is all politics, rant by host, sophomoric humor, add guest who opines on politics, repeat. Its boring, lame, and uninteresting. They all use the same formula.
I quit watching the ‘new’ guys way before Trump came along.
They just aren’t funny.
bingo
Entertainment hasn’t been about “entertainment” for a very long time. It has been about indoctrination. If you don’t think so, perform a little test. Ask a dozen people what percentage blacks or gays are in the total population. You will get answers of about 50 and 30 percent. (The real answer, depending on location and source, is about 17% and 1%.) That last number is a bit harder to come by and I have composited a lot of reading sources. But the first number is from the national statistics. The reason people overestimate these numbers is the percentages of these groups in commercials, TV, movies and magazine ads are over represented.
The one thing that I cannot, for the life of me process, is why would an advertiser sponsor a show that p.....s off 60+ million people? just sayin
Giving the finger to half the people who live in this country is fine with the MSM... but all hell would break loose if three gay men were offended...
That's the standard.
They are not funny at all. Conan O’Brien show is reduced to a 30 minute show now on TBS.
Jay does not have a good reputation within the industry but I’ll say this for him: he has always worked clean and for the most part, non-politically. I can still remember how brilliant he was at a small comedy club in LA back in the 80s. Colbert is a pig. An unfunny pig.
