Ethiopia minister: Clear similarity between two crashes

Preliminary data retrieved from the flight data recorder of the Ethiopian Airlines plane that crashed shows "a clear similarity" with an earlier disaster in Indonesia, Ethiopia's transport minister said Sunday. Dagmawit Moges told reporters that the Ethiopian government intends to release detailed findings within one month. "The black box has been found in a good condition that enabled us to extract almost all the data inside," she told reporters Sunday evening. Officials say 157 people from 35 different countries were killed when the Nairobi-bound plane crashed shortly after takeoff. The United States and many other countries then grounded the Boeing 737 Max 8 as it had also been used in the Lion Air crash in October in Indonesia. Suspicions emerged that faulty sensors and software may have contributed to the two crashes in less than six months.

Obviously he has conducted a thorough technological analysis of both incidents.

He is a she according to the article. That said, there is a lot at stake with the 737 Max. A redesign will cost the company billions if the NTSB finds it troublesome. I won't knowingly fly on one after what I've read about the cost cutting corners that were taken during the design process.

It doesn't sound like basic design problems. It sounds like software and/or training problems.

It's almost never a problem with design.

Press accounts say the engines are too big and had to be remounted on the wings. This required a new black box(mcas) system to make the plane stable during manual flight operations. Maybe this can be overcome by a computer update and more training, but there people lining up on both sides of the issue. The pilot that crashed into the Hudson a few years ago suggest the 737 MAX needs a redesign.

Third World ?

Exactly! I'm embarrassed to admit that I've flown Third World airlines several times. But that was back when I was young, stupid and was convinced that I was invincible.

What? Lousy poorly trained low hours pilots?

Both planes flew with erratic altitude changes that could indicate the pilots struggled to control the aircraft.

If static pressure (altitude) is corrected by Angle of Attack information then a dirty Angle of Attack probe will provide very erratic information and cause the altimeters to go crazy. If the autopilot system is connected in then a wild ride is going to happen.
