Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez recalled how her public-school teachers thought she needed “remedial education” because she had grown up speaking Spanish at home.
The freshman lawmaker, speaking Saturday at a packed town hall organized by the Jackson Heights People for Public Schools, said, “As a child I spoke Spanish first. … and I went to a school where no one looked like me. I went to a school where teachers thought I needed remedial education because I spoke two languages instead of one.”
It wasn’t until she took a “high-stakes” test in which she scored in the 99th percentile across the board, she said, that educators realized she did not need extra help.
“It took a test instead of understanding the child in front of them,” said Ocasio-Cortez, who shared the stage with State Sen. Jessica Ramos, Assemblywoman Catalina Cruz, and NYU Professor Diane Ravitch, a leading charter school opponent.
She recalled her father, Sergio Ocasio, attended Brooklyn Tech and asked why all city schools couldn’t be as good.
“This issue is structural and it is systemic which means we need a solution just like with the Green New Deal, we need a solution on the scale of the problem,” said the lawmaker.
“I should never be made to feel that being bilingual was a deficit in the first place,” she said.

She also talked about her family fleeing their native Bronx to find better schools in the suburbs.
“My parents, they felt like they had to choose between their community and a quality school, a quality public school,” she said. “They felt confronted with this choice that we still see today 30 years later.”
AOC, who ran partly on a platform of free higher education, owes between $15,000 and $50,000 in student loan debt, her Congressional disclosures show.
Sorry....don’t believe a bit of it....not even a little bit of it.
I suppose it’s possible, but I doubt she scored in the 99th percentile on any test. She certainly doesn’t sound very bright.

I’m also very skeptical of this. She would have started school sometime around 1997-1999, and I think by then NYC schools would be very PC and would not treat her the way she claims. She would have been a little darling.
Pure bull crap. What teacher on the planet would look down on a child who can speak two languages? They might not like the language, but they would at least recognize the ability to command two languages as a positive thing.
It’s funny how her lies are catching up so fast.
Has this twit come out against the college entrance scams perpetrated by liberal Hollywood, liberal billionaires, liberal colleges and probably liberal politicians? I haven’t heard much about her feelings on this which is quite unusual in that she has a feeling on everything.
I don’t believe it, either. She is a fanatic who must at a minimum, embellish and exaggerate everything.
So, Democrat school teachers and Democrat school administrators misjudged her. So... what? She went on to college and became a congresswoman. Only in America. There’s your story.

No, she doesn’t measure up. Either the test was at a “See John run” level or she is just lying. Based upon her public statements I knew more about pretty much everything than she does when I was in first grade. Maybe that 99 number was her IQ. That would explain much.
