How the feds cracked the college admissions scam
New York Post ^

The slew of criminal charges in the sweeping college cheating scam originated from an unrelated federal case in the Boston area — and a financial executive desperate for mercy, according to a new report. The feds were tipped off to what would be the biggest college admissions scheme ever prosecuted thanks to the businessman, who was under investigation in a securities fraud case, the Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday. In a bid for leniency, he told investigators that Rudolph “Rudy” Meredith, the head women’s soccer coach at Yale, solicited bribes from him in exchange for recommending his daughter for admission as an athletic recruit, a source told the Journal. The probe turned to Meredith — then widened to nearly 50 others as the feds learned the scam involved wealthy parents, other college athletic coaches, and crooked SAT and ACT test proctors. At the heart of the scheme was William “Rick” Singer, a college prep expert whose business in California was aimed at getting kids into some of the nation’s top schools. On Tuesday, Singer pleaded guilty to charges that he accepted more than $25 million in bribes to help students cheat on their college entrance exams or gain acceptance to schools as athletes — even when they didn’t play sports. Thirty-three parents are among those charged, including TV actresses Lori Loughlin and Felicity Huffman.

These cases don’t outwardly sound like they fit the requirements for an entrapment defense:

Per nypost the guy who first told feds is Morrie Tobin. From LA. He wore a wire with Meredith, the Yale soccer coach.Tobin was not charged in the Admissions scandalbut pled guilty in the other case.

“If “no one cared” you might have passed it by. “

We have blue states that are lawless and in open rebellion, a full on invasion underway and a 4 trillion dollar corrupt stasi state in the hands of the radical left. A corrupt DOJ/FBI who tried/is trying to overthrow a president of the United States.

The point is qui bono? Why this ‘loud’ bust by our corrupt DOJ? It’s a look squirrel event...why? When we have way more important things to worry about—Like our very survival.

That’s awesome! Truly inspirational!

What I am getting at is let’s say these spoiled rich kids transcripts are full of d and f grades. In my day, that was failing all over the place. These failed students, even though they’ve got their diploma in hand, are going to eventually apply for a job where their transcripts will be reviewed. What employer would want to hire that kind of student? Or is bought college and/or grades another pipeline that needs to be looked at?

You can buy your stupid kid a spot in a top-notch college, but when the grades don’t match up? What happens then?

“Not sure how this is illegal at a private school.”

Private schools do get Fed money, too, I believe. Perhaps in the form of tax breaks.

I prefer to trust schools who refuse to let the government “in” in any way, and reject Federal funds. Bob Jones. Hillsdale. Grove City.

1st I have never had an employer look at my college transcripts. 2nd college isn’t what it use to be.
Many classes are pass fail, B’s are the knew D’s. The biggest hurdle is getting into college. Ben Shapiro said this was his experience at Harvard Law School.

Thanks. It sure inspired me. I truly hated high school. I hated the environment, the structure, the prison-like conditions (they even locked the doors with a chain to prevent skipping, to which I called the fire department... I was a troublemaker (hence my screen name)). At university I ‘adulted’ as they say these days. It was up to me, which is what I always wanted from HS.

My point was about grades is, you have to really work at failing out of university. If I recall you can’t even get by with Ds, and Fs will get you kicked out. If you just show up and do the modicum of work you will get a passing grade. But that’s as you said a marker of what kind of person you are and if transcripts are ever reviewed, Cs won’t cut it any more than Ds and Fs.

I’ve got a suspicion that some of these people’s parents wanted their kids to go to University to get their MRS. Degree as they say. Dumb as rocks kids due to overindulgent and inattentive parenting, knowing that a University is a good place for them to marry up intelligence wise or marry up in wealth and connections (and this is for guys too, not just women). Like back in the previous centuries, the elites almost always had arranged marriages for the purposes of wealth and power, not so much for love. Not to say these are bad people, just not necessarily high on the IQ scale or never learned to apply themselves. They use their money and connections to get into school and it didn’t start there and doesn’t stop there. They use their connections to get into the right cliques, social clubs, fraternities and sororities etc to make more connections for later in life. The university scam is just one in a life of sordid machinations.

Morrie Tobin is going to suffer an early death.

I can’t imagine his life ending in any other way. His tip-off will cause the financial downfall of many, hopefully hundreds, of people. And prison time to boot.

Morrie Tobin is Canadian. Canadians don’t understand our fascination with elite colleges.
