California Is Drought Free After Very Wet Winter — a First in More Than 7 Years, Officials Say

California is free of drought and only a small amount of territory remains in the lesser condition of abnormal dryness after a very wet winter.

The state has been mired in drought since Dec. 20, 2011, according to the National Weather Service.

“Until this week some part of the state had seen some form of drought for 376 consecutive weeks,” the weather service tweeted.

The U.S. Drought Monitor says Thursday that more than 93 percent of the state is free of drought or dryness. Tiny areas of abnormal dryness along the Oregon border and in parts of four southern counties amount to less than 7 percent of the state.

The Drought Monitor says the conditions in the far south are due to very dry prior years, noting that reservoirs in San Diego County are at only 65 percent of capacity. After heavy snow early this week in Southern California mountains, weather is expected to warm under influence of Santa Ana winds before another storm approaches the state next week.

Can’t be.

Droughts are “the new normal” in CA

Forever.

Once Trump was in office, the levels in the reservoirs began to rise again...

"Droughts are “the new normal” in CA"

When I lived there in the 80's - 90's there were always droughts in Southern Cali. It's always been the new normal, per rainfall averages (which is how they actually determine these things) there are many areas of SoCal that are desert and many other places that are on the verge of being a desert. If you live in a desert, you should probably expect droughts....

And they shipped that water right out to sea and will be bitching in August because the current reservoir level will be dropping

It would help if they gave up “protecting” that stupid fish and allowed the water to be retained by the damn they’ve put our of operation.

“Seems it never rains in Southern California.
Seems I’ve often heard that kind of talk before
It never rains in California
But boy don’t they warn you
It pours
Man, it pours.”

“And they shipped that water right out to sea and will be bitching in August because the current reservoir level will be dropping”

That’s the ticket! The massive snowfall and rains will be a distant memory for the knuckle dragging eyelid drooping welfare consuming parasites of California. Then it’s time to bitch and complain, and scream for somebody to save us!

We had a similar precip year in 2016-2017 and the drought was declared over in that year too...but they went right back to complaining about it the next year, saying the previous year was a fluke.

Guess what! NOT

We got 50 feet of snow in the Sierras, 45 days of rain in the Bay Area, coldest winter in LA in decades featuring snow in Pasadena, but...but...Climate Change! We’re all gonna diiiie!

And all the water went right out to the sea in the storm drains and creeks cuzz you know, it would be un-ecological and all to build catchment reservoirs...destroying habitat for big kitties! Oh Noooos! Can’t have that!

Yep. Simply not possible. The state was never going to have normal rainfall ever again. The warmist kooks told us so.

Of course, this has been a very HEAVY rainfall season. That HAS to be blamed on global warming.

Forget the fact that these cycles are very normal and have gone on forever. For those who have been around long enough, we know they roughly follow the 11 year sunspot cycle.

Knowing little or nothing about the state I'm not at all certain where Kalifornia gets its water.I know it gets some from the Colorado River. I also know that the Sierra Nevadas get huge snowfalls every winter and,as a result,I assume they get a fair amount of runoff from the Spring melting.

I've always believed that they get very little in the way of rainfall which might be a problem given the huge population and the needs of agriculture.

I’ve been buying sweaters, fleeces, sweats, etc for next winter in the close-out racks at Kohls and Macys. Some incredible bargains to be had. Work-out and yard work tee-shirts for $2.50. Flannel shirts for $7.00. Great fleeces for $8.00. Light weight jackets for $6.00.

I’m all set for the next big freeze.

Now I have to look up 11 year sunspot cycle :)

And how about Rs using RECENT statement, only a few years old, about this being the new normal, to attack Ds and climate psychos??

Do they ever think?

Obama in office, harsh drought. Trump takes over, no more drought! Coincidence?

We have two dams and a very large system of percolation basins built into the Santa Ana River, supplying Orange County with groundwater. And our aquifer is very deep, around 1,000 feet.

But since the national political class has decided that California must house millions of new immigrants we can’t keep up with the demand forced upon us by the open borders lobby.

In Colorado we had a severe drought in 2003-4. We were told that it wasn’t temporary and we would never see good snows at the ski areas again and that the reservoirs would never fill again in our lifetimes.

The reservoirs in question have filled and spilled several times sine then and the ski areas are doing fine.
