Sen. Martha McSally reveals she was raped by superior officer while serving in the Air Force

A freshman senator revealed Wednesday that she almost quit the Air Force after she was sexually assaulted. Martha McSally, an Arizona Republican, called herself a “military sexual assault survivor” during a Senate Armed Services subcommittee hearing aiming to provide better support to victims.

“Like so many women and men, I didn’t trust the system at the time,” McSally, who served in the Air Force from 1988 to 2010, said during the hearing. “I blamed myself. I was ashamed and confused. I thought I was strong but felt powerless. The perpetrators abused their position of power in profound ways. In one case I was preyed upon and raped by a superior officer.”

McSally, 52, said her experience eventually led her to want to help others avoid the same “wholly inadequate responses” with which she was presented....

“I almost separated from the Air Force at 18 years of service over my despair. Like many victims, I felt like the system was raping me all over again.” Before retiring as a colonel, McSally became the first American woman to fly in combat.

Last year, McSally also told the Wall Street Journal that she had been sexually abused by her high school track coach.

She is a “me first” officer that jumped outside the chain of command when she personally objected to having to be covered when off base. Instead of taking it up the chain she went straight to the congressional route.

We had no SOFA exempting worn from local laws but she didn’t care. It was all about her.

I don’t believe a word she says.

So was my wife when she was small!

However my wife never brought it up publicly as a means to advance her career ! This woman has now done it twice.

“The article said that the coach, who was 20 years older than her, coerced her into sex. Although she was uncomfortable, she said the coach kept her from talking about it with others by manipulating her mentally.

“Even though he didn’t physically force me, it certainly was an emotional manipulation,” McSally was quoted in the story as saying...”

https://www.azcentral.com/story/news/politics/arizona/2018/04/23/report-rep-martha-mcsally-alleges-sex-abuse-teen-coach-jack-dwyer-st-academy-bay-view-rhode-island/544092002/

The coach was contacted and denies the story. He left the school’s employment around that time, but why is unknown.

The same link points out McSally has also claimed she was stalked:

“At the time [2014], she said in a written statement that she had “threats” made against her, “and wasn’t even safe in my own home or my car when my stalker broke in and held me in a hostage-like situation.”

I recon that makes at least three men who supposedly forced her, by emotional manipulation or worse, to have sex with them. None of which she reported until in Congress, although she had extensive congressional contacts long before leaving the USAF. And apparently she never fought back.

It wouldn’t be too hard to find the rapist if McSally was serious.

And said rapist can still be prosecuted under the UCMJ, even if they were retired.

Of course...McSally could also be prosecuted for making a false allegation.

I want the claims to not be true because that is horrible if that happened to her (or anyone else).

O.K. She should name him and he should be tried in a Military Court. It won’t stop until there are real consequences.

Perhaps trying to deflect assertions that she denies that such things happen? Still, a person militarily trained theoretically should be able to deter advances. As a dame in minimally supervised service, you Are a target. So, first thing, build a posse? At least don’t rely on channels.

I have sympathy for victims of any crime but you have to report crimes when they happen.

This didn't happen to a child. She was an adult.

She has yet to name the alleged suspect.

If she doesn't want to name him publicly I would hope she would go to AF authorities so they can investigate.

If she made the claim but doesn't follow through with at least a private military investigation I will consider her claims exaggerated or suspect.

Women claim they want to stop sexual assaults but they never seem to take personal action to stop it.

In February of 2018, in the case of Major General James Grazioplene, 68, of Gainesville, Virginia, the Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces, or CAAF, set the statute of limitations on rape cases at five years.

Grazioplene had been charged with raping a 46 year old victim in a series of rapes when she was a minor during the late 1970’s through the late 1980’s.

At the time of some of the offenses, there was no statute of limitations under the Uniform Code of Military Justice.

If someone I knew and cared about told me decade(s) later about being sexually assaulted, it would be very hard for me to accept that they never felt they could come to me with it.

One of the hardest things for me to accept, is that it is my job to support my significant other, and at times she would not want to tell me because she didn’t want to be defended, or championed on an issue like this.

Another words, I would be of no use to her, and it would tell me volumes about our true relationship.

I’m skeptical. I watched as good looking high school classmates tried to seduce the handsome teachers, married or otherwise. The better looking the girl, the more experienced and successful they were. In the USAF I saw good looking women, both officers and enlisted, sleeping with officers for benefits. I was dating a good looking SRA and had been enjoying her benefits for a couple of months when I dropped in to her apartment unannounced and surprised her bumping uglies with the Vice Commander of the AF base (married) on the couch in her living room. I politely and rapidly left and kept my mouth shut. These women not only use their sex for advancement, they also use the victim card to their benefit when sex doesn’t work.

Maybe it’s a bad idea to integrate men and women into units because of the romantic element. It doesn’t belong on the combat team.

“It was too late to do anything about it”

Really? Why?

If someone raped my daughter, it would rain rapist for weeks, no matter how long it had been.

I meant to sat that there was no statute of limitatioins on the offense of RAPE under the UCMJ, since it contained a potential death sentence. The CAAF set aside the UCMJ death penalty for rape to be in accordance with Supreme Court rulings on the death penalty and rape convictions.
