Sen. Rand Paul loves the Constitution so much that he is willing to put it in jeopardy by opposing President Trump's emergency measures declaration. Paul's libertarian streak has emerged yet again at a fortuitous time for Democrats hoping to import more voters and a calamitous time for conservatives desperate for a big victory on immigration.
"I can't vote to give the president the power to spend money that hasn't been appropriated by Congress. We may want more money for border security, but Congress didn't authorize it. If we take away those checks and balances, it's a dangerous thing," Paul said while addressing a Southern Kentucky Lincoln Day Dinner.
The above quote illustrates the problem with Paul's constitutionalist line of thinking. While Paul is concerned about proper procedure, his liberal enemies are advancing toward their next goal. While Paul is willing to surrender authority because of concerns over technicalities, the Democrats rush headlong into the next extra-constitutional power-grab that pushes the U.S. Republic closer and closer to dissolution. Paul's "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" shtick is getting old, and his principles are not usually worth defending.
The principles of libertarians and Beltway "conservatives" always seem to conveniently align with those of big business and corporate capital. This is because of a well financed network of intellectual think-tanks, activist training, lobbying programs, and university infiltration that quietly peddles influence to enforce neoliberal globalist norms among the right. The Koch brothers, for example, are libertarians who use their vast resources to prevent popular trade and immigration reforms from being supported by Republicans in Congress.

He’s not my emperor, and the obnoxious talk gets us nowhere.
Two years in, and still very little military on the border. No taxing of remittances. You and others are willing to go after some us despite there being no coherent strategy to fight the invasion. The emergency is wasted political capital. The President can close the border NOW. Why hasn’t he? I ask that as a supporter. I have been posting about military presence on the border for years. I was talking about the invasion all the way back in the Boosh presidency (not in this forum). Are you seriously thinking Trump should make his last stand on emergency funding??
Paul clings to idealism in the face of overwhelming evidence that the physical world could give two craps about the ideology floating around in his head. He has this in common with AOC. Ideology should be a guide only. We have imperfect knowledge of the world and the world even on the atomic level doesn’t line up with how we think things should be.
True words.
Paul makes me question the absolute allegiance to the Constitution in times of emergency.
Open your eyes and look at what is happening...then tell me that OUR constitution forbids us from solving this.
That is NUTS, and either the constitution or Paul needs to be ignored.
Call me selfish, but I AM CONCERNED WITH MY,,,MY SAFETY.
But he is not going there. To me, THAT makes him a hypocrite because he is only targeting Trump with this stand. It also makes me suspicious that he, too, is on the take somehow on this border issue. So who might be paying him off here???
Yes, of course. All these GOP “constitionalists” did nothing but run their mouths for 8 years while the kenyan committed one unconstitutional act after another. Now they fight POTUS tooth and nail. Why? Follow the money, obviously. The open borders agenda GOP donor class hates POTUS so now their bought and paid for career politicians fight.
Rand Paul, the others of the NEA Four and whomever may join them have chosen the wrong hill to plant their flag upon and thereon die. The act, per se, does not touch the Congress power of the purse and Trump has laid out a roadmap that that uses a multiple approach to financing his intention to build more walls. Most of these methods do not rely on invoking the NEA, in fact, only one may require the NEA. That would be the reprogramming of Military Construction appropriations, something that happens almost every single fiscal year for any number of reasons over the years. To claim that Trump is trampling on the separation of powers is beyond the pale.
A simple legal analysis of the declaration of the NEA and the Trump plan to expand the wall building beyond the appropriations provided in the FY2019 act that ended the partial shutdown clearly show that all of this is legal, Constitutional, and a proper use of Executive power. This suggests that the opposition is both political (the Democrat objection) and kowtowing to corporate donors (the Republicans). Trump acts in the best interests of the country and the American people while Beltway politicians act in their own interests tossing up empty protests claiming their loyal fealty to the Constitution. Nonsense.
You think the emergency funding saves us?
You want to see why the Republic is dying...look in the mirror. We would not even be in this position if we did not have tens of millions of voters without a clue about civics.
I ask again, how many of you took the personal executive decision to remove your children from socialist government schooling? That is the factory for the enemy.
This is not a personal attack on you. I am just a bit sick of the lack of foresight and principle on our side. And I see what we are doing as akin to a cavalry charge on a machine gun nest
“He is against US involvement in foreign wars, but is OK with his own country being invaded.”
That sums it up perfectly.
From the article: “While Paul is concerned about proper procedure, his liberal enemies are advancing toward their next goal. While Paul is willing to surrender authority because of concerns over technicalities, the Democrats rush headlong into the next extra-constitutional power-grab that pushes the U.S. Republic closer and closer to dissolution.”
All these bastards in Congress worried about setting “precedent” that the future Dems will use against us. What folly that is. The Dems don’t give a damn about trivialities like that...with communists, it’s always “the ends justifies the means” regardless of trifles like the U.S. Constitution.
The thing that galls me to no end is that President Trump has the Constitutional executive powers and the existing legislated powers to declare this emergency, stop this foreign invasion, and redirect already-appropriated money as needed.
It isn’t ideology.
It is THE LAW. You know, the highest law of the land?
Your comments are shocking on so many levels, especially as a Christian. In fact your post screams secular humanism. And that is the real enemy, ultimately.
“we can wrap the principles around the Dems neck.”
Republicans have done the same thing. It ain’t gonna happen. Congress can always pull their power back.
You're absolutely right about this. The only way that Mexico rather than US taxpayers will pay for this wall is to all remittances sent by foreign nationals and their families back to their home country, with Mexico and Central America being the main source.
I don't understand why taxing remittances wasn't at the top of the President's agenda from the get-go. It's a win-win strategy that would also provide tax relief to Americans by taxing foreign countries and foreign nationals.
Most can’t give up cable tv or even cable news.
Good luck on your crusade.
Rand Paul thinks this will allow future democrat administrations to do the same thing and will be not an emergency. They will do that anyway. Have the Republicans ever stood in the way of the democrats
Much like sending a payment (ammo) the the cable companies each month.
Your post is incoherent.
Bottom line, we can win on this even if the President backs down. Let’s see him order the ACOE to expedite construction.
Where are the troops on the border? Where is the taxing of remittances?
The law says that Trump can do this. The law is not cut and dried, if it were we would rely on statute alone. We cannot however so we rely equally on precedent.
Government schooling is worse. Check out the children accosting Feinstein. That is the real problem
Maybe so, but why bother when there are things he can do instead of wasting political capital on this?
Send the military. Tax remittances. Build the wall with the other billions. Hang Dem discovery of concern for the Constitution around their sorry necks.
Trump has the right to do this. Your post is alarmingly incoherent.
You think the emergency funding saves us?
You want to see why the Republic is dying...look in the mirror.
LMAO. Heroin, Fentanyl and 70,000 illegals a month are pouring across the undefended border. And you want an intellectual debate??? Sure, that will secure the border ASAP. No doubt. LOL. You Paulistinians are hilariously vapid.
POTUS is trying to stop this murderous national emergency. Senator Rand Paul is obstructing him. Case closed.
Adios.
Thats not accurate
Hes pretty good on most stuff
I wish hed just lick his nuts on this one
Its a mistake
Senate chamber has to be huge to hold all those egos
