Sen. Rand Paul loves the Constitution so much that he is willing to put it in jeopardy by opposing President Trump's emergency measures declaration. Paul's libertarian streak has emerged yet again at a fortuitous time for Democrats hoping to import more voters and a calamitous time for conservatives desperate for a big victory on immigration.
"I can't vote to give the president the power to spend money that hasn't been appropriated by Congress. We may want more money for border security, but Congress didn't authorize it. If we take away those checks and balances, it's a dangerous thing," Paul said while addressing a Southern Kentucky Lincoln Day Dinner.
The above quote illustrates the problem with Paul's constitutionalist line of thinking. While Paul is concerned about proper procedure, his liberal enemies are advancing toward their next goal. While Paul is willing to surrender authority because of concerns over technicalities, the Democrats rush headlong into the next extra-constitutional power-grab that pushes the U.S. Republic closer and closer to dissolution. Paul's "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" shtick is getting old, and his principles are not usually worth defending.
The principles of libertarians and Beltway "conservatives" always seem to conveniently align with those of big business and corporate capital. This is because of a well financed network of intellectual think-tanks, activist training, lobbying programs, and university infiltration that quietly peddles influence to enforce neoliberal globalist norms among the right. The Koch brothers, for example, are libertarians who use their vast resources to prevent popular trade and immigration reforms from being supported by Republicans in Congress.

“Do they need 2/3 or a majority to approve or override, I dont know which.”
It takes a simple majority in each house to approve. However, if the president vetoes, it takes 2/3 of each house to override the veto.
Rand Paul has no problem interpreting the Constitution as a suicide pact.
Libertarian purists like Rand Paul need to understand that there won’t be any Constitution to defend when the country is completely overrun with Meso-American invaders, because when that happens, we will have the cultural and political system of Meso-America - a banana “republic” in place of a Constitutional Republic.
Well, sadly on that one I share your cynicism.
I think Trump would be wise not to expend too much political capital on the emergency. Build the wall with the billions he has and put the military on the border. Lay barbed wire and barriers. Go after the NGO’s. And then wrap the Dems fake Constitutional concerns around their necks like a gasoline filled tire...
“Congress doesnt have the Constitutional authority to delegate powers to other branches.’
Whether or not they do, in theory, doesn’t matter. Fact is, they’ve been doing it for a long time and getting away with it. What is there to stop them?
Rand and the Repubs are IGNORING the laws they enacted to protect the US in times like this.
Voting that there is not a border emergency now is touching the third rail of conservative politics. Any GOP politician who does it will never be taken seriously again.
I’ve often felt Sen Rand was more like an Anarchist than a Libertarian.
A well-spoken Anarchist; an Anarchist, just the same.
I posted this yesterday and repeat it now: If Paul was really concerned about Presidents exceeding executive power, he would lead the charge to repeal the law permitting Presidential declaration of emergencies.
But he is not going there. To me, THAT makes him a hypocrite because he is only targeting Trump with this stand. It also makes me suspicious that he, too, is on the take somehow on this border issue. So who might be paying him off here???
The Republic will die if we continue embracing pragmatism.
The Republic will die if we don’t have a secure border. Your emperor Rand has no clothes. Buy a clue before it’s too late.
I live in Houston. We have millions of illegals here and it is crazy. I think we are probably on the same page, except for the tactical side. We are in a culture war and we *are* being invaded by drugs and people.
Rand Paul is another do nothing Senator. What exactly has he accomplished for the good of the people since he got elected?
He is his Father’s son.
Paul is more willing to let the Dems destroy the country and constitution than he is willing to work with Trump on finding creative funding sources.
It isn’t theory. It is very clear. Like I said in my other post, we can wrap the principles around the Dems neck.
Runt Paul never was too bright.
Runt Paul never was too bright.
Libertarianism is uncomfortable wit the concept of nation.
Also uncomfortable with anything that implies constraint on an individual. Most publically (usually loudly!) self proclaimed libertarians that I know conflate libertarianism with libertinism. Not only do they not want any outside party constraining them they dont want to have any self constraint either.
Exactly. I would have a tiny shred of respect for Rand if he just came out and admitted his an open borders guy. Instead he chooses to undermine and knife POTUS in the dark of night posing as a “constitionalist.” That’s a political hit job. Plain and simple.
The “principled” thing to do is be honest about your motivations. All Rand is doing here is aiding Democrats and the open borders agenda GOP by forcing POTUS to defend his right flank while engaging the Dems/MSM/GOPe, etc.
Rand Paul 2024!
2/3 (67) to override a veto.
Additionally, I hope that opposition to any form of amnesty for illegal immigrants becomes a litmus test for viable Republican candidates from now on. Let all of the advocates of "a path to citizenship" go over to the Democrats where they belong.
