Russia passes law to jail people for 15 days for 'disrespecting' government

Russia’s parliament has approved a controversial law that allows courts to jail people for online “disrespect” of government or state officials, including the president, Vladimir Putin.

The law, which critics say is reminiscent of Soviet-era legislation used to target political dissidents, stipulates fines of up to 100,000 roubles (£1,155) for “indecent” online posts that demonstrate a “blatant disrespect for society, the country, Russia’s official state symbols, the constitution, or the authorities”.

Repeat offenders can be hit with fines of up to twice this sum, or 15 days behind bars.

Alexander Verkhovsky, the head of the Moscow-based Sova Centre, which monitors abuse of anti-extremism legislation, said people could face prosecution for online comments such as “Putin is a bastard”, or jokes about parliament. Others expressed concern that the law was so vaguely worded that almost any online criticism of the authorities, including satirical memes, could be construed as “disrespect”.

“Soon we’ll be telling jokes about the authorities in whispers in the kitchen,” Sergey Shvakin, a Moscow-based lawyer, wrote on Facebook.

Recently i had watched a bunch of youtube videos of Putin mingling with everyday folks in the country.

I NEVER had a doubt he would kill whomever necessary to keep power, like a Clinton.

But I did get the feeling he really loved his country and the people.

I got suckered.

Parliament doesn’t pass anything like this without him behind it.

We about have that in the US, but it is disrespecting Dems. We can get cited for calling someone with a wrong pronoun, a conservative idea is hate speech, etc.

There is a way to keep government in check——what was that “Right” called again? Whatever it is, I know Democrats and all progressives are trying to ban it-—Geeesh, I wish I could remember that thing that keeps government in check by the people-—oh well, it will come to me.

amazon twitter etc are banning any books or speech critical of islam- how soon before companies report such activity, contact authorities, and police show up at the ‘offender’s house’, and charges them with hate crimes?

Minutes of research shows the “Sova Centre” as being a Soros organization, and Sergey Shvakin being in the field of international law specializing in globalization.

Interesting choice of sources to quote on this matter. Almost as if an agenda is at play...

This merely formalizes what exists there for a long time. I know a young lady there named Ksenya. Cute. Flirted. Got shot down.

We kept talking, and when the topic of Putin came up, she was absolutely horrified to say anything AT ALL about him except some vague positive platitude.

Turns out, you didn’t want to be on Social Media talking smack about Putin. Bad things would happen .... all the way from you lose your job, to you suddenly get fatal cancer.

A Russian and an American are arguing over which country is better.

The American says, “In my country, I can say that I don’t like the American President.”

The Russian retorts, “Is same in my country, I too can say I don’t like American President.”

Thinking back, our First Amendment already suffers here. Wasn't Hank Williams Jr. fired from ESPN for comparing Mister Obama to Hitler in an interview?

And then, weren't a few (alleged) journalists fired for criticizing Mister Obama?

Wasn't the CEO of Firefox fired for supporting normal marriage?

And more to the point, if the Dems ever get complete control, they will attempt to criminalize dissent. It's called "hate speech", and it means whatever they want it to mean.

And our very fine Country without First Amendment protections is scary to think about.

.

Yeah...I can’t think of it, either, but I think it only works if you apply it...

Russia’s parliament has approved a controversial law that allows courts to jail people for online “disrespect” of government or state officials, including the president, Vladimir Putin.

Also from the Guardian: "Journalist" calls police as Tommy Robinson makes video at his home

Looks like Tommy's goin' back to jail for disrespecting the HomoFascists Muslimes in the UK government again.

Wonder which law the "Guardian" supports.
