SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) Puerto Rico's governor activated the National Guard on Tuesday to rush food, medicine and gasoline to the popular tourist islands of Vieques and Culebra following a major breakdown in transportation that critics say could have been avoided.
The announcement came after cargo ferries that supply the two islands located some 20 miles (32 kilometers) east of Puerto Rico recently broke down, cutting an important lifeline to the roughly 11,000 people who live there. In addition, tens of thousands of tourists visit the islands every year, and people have been posting pictures on social media of empty shelves at supermarkets and long lines at gas stations.
"This has been a disaster," Nilda Medina, a Vieques resident, said in a phone interview. "Right now there is no milk. We are sharing what little we have with islanders and with tourists."

When I am asked what's the best way of getting to Culebra or Vieques islands, I always offer: what do you prefer, 30 minutes of terror (on puddle jumper, 9-seater commuter plane) or hours and hours of misery (attempting a crossing on the ferry service)? I always pick terror over misery.
Puerto Rico Ping! Please Freepmail me if you want on or off the list.
Time to cut Marxist PR loose. No statehood for this lefty territory. Let Cuba and Venezuela take care of it.
Sailed to Culebra from USVI a few years back.
The Navy used to use it for gunnery practice.
No mention of the governors name?
Who’s corrupt as any shitzhole country
What do you think the fallout of this latest fiasco will be?
Is there any indication that electorate is getting fed up with government failure after government failure? Post Katrina, the Democrats paid a price in LA. But that was the final straw after decades of corruption and incompetence.
With PR’s unique party structure, how do you think this shakes out down the road?
What does the US get from Puerto Rico other than hostility, socialists, and drained resources?
like Sandy Cortez?
Re picture of Culebra:
Beautiful, but obviously not self-sustaining without a constant supply chain.
bunch of geniuses running that place
That’s the problem. We now have TWO basically democrat parties. Over the last 20 years, no administration has been reelected. Without any real, existing alternative, a conservative leader a new party needs to emerge. I don’t see one in the near future, though.
We get Puerto Ricans moving to Florida to vote democrat so that Florida will be ruined.
That’s all fine and good, but do you know the way to San Jose?
One shouldn’t expect first world services in third world hellholes where they don’t speak English.
Independence for Puerto Rico now.
Tens, maybe hundreds of thousands of outstanding soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen since 1898. You can find some names of them on the Vietnam Memorial, buried in Arlington, and more in National Cemeteries around the globe.
Over my career, I personally served with dozens of outstanding soldiers, NCOs, and officers from Puerto Rico.
“do you know the way to San Jose?”
Had to Google that...
Thanks for that. Additionally, a strategic location among the world's shipping lanes. Teddy Roosevelt was no dummy when he declared that "Puerto Rico is ours and we must have it (annex it)".
They’ll still find a way to blame it on Trump.
