They say hindsight is 20/20. Sure enough, looking back, Canadas history includes admirable domestic advances and global contributions that set us apart. But, like many modern industrial nations, in our pursuit of progress we have damaged the world around us. Today, with experience, information and science at our fingertips, foresight is also increasingly 20/20. And in the distance, I hope to see Canada reverse this trend and become a champion of sustainability.
As the fourth-generation leader of a family business nearly as old as The Globe and Mail itself, I believe Canadians should take a generational view forward. And for those generations, we need to re-engineer how business intersects with the environment, stemming the once-inevitable pollution and destruction caused in pursuit of profit and progress.
Recent narratives have fostered a view that economic growth and sustainability are at odds. That simply isnt true. Companies including ours have shown quite the opposite. Forward-looking efforts, including carbon, plastic and food-waste reductions, not only foreshadow a circular economy, they boost shareholder returns. Our current take-make-waste model for the economy is outdated, and in the future, growing prosperity cannot be linked to growing landfills.

Stay north of the line and make as little noise as possible.
Maybe they’ll win a Stanley Cup.
Incorporate California as the eleventh province. We’ll be glad to be rid of it, and the temperature added to Canada’s will raise the average, making Canada warmer.
What can they accomplish after the two generations of Trudeau destruction?
~~A complete makeover and name change straight from the sandbox?
The French and English heritage will be gone.
Canada must and will continue to be our most trusted ally.
Considering the almost utter mindlessness of other nations that is the truth. Tearing each others citizens apart, hatred abounds. What a way to live. Look at India and Pakistan, The Sudan, Ukraine and Russia.
I can see the good old United States every day in the twin cities of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario and Michigan. The great freighters wend their way up bound and down bound on the majestic St. Mary's River. I quaff a Tim Hortons coffee and know why I left my native England sixty odd years ago. Yeah, lucky old me.
I’m not a real big hockey fan, but it’s well known that Canada wins it every year as it is. Pick whatever team wins it and then look at who the best players are and the majority, and you’ll find in most cases they are Canadian.
No Cups since 1993.
Well Steely old chap...that is one way of looking at the US/CAN relationship,,,another would be to recognize that Canada is now a big girl that can stand on her own with a population closing in on 40 million well educated democratic law abiding citizens, is the second largest country in the world with a backyard full of natural resources that enjoys a unique partnership with the greatest country in the world...a partnership that is based on common core values that is a beacon of freedom worldwide.. so giving our people the finger makes you look kinda stupid...and very unsteely.
Also if they forgive us for Springsteen, I’ll cut them slack on Bieber.
Yeah but it’s the ugly brother. Likes to wear red and drinks to little.
Ok, well said.
Thank you Tom.
I was just making the point that the top players are largely Canadian.
Canada gave us Nickelback. This is unforgivable and they haven’t even tried to apologize.
What has Canada accomplished in ANY century?
