On Monday, President Donald J. Trump will sign an executive order to help sea veterans seamlessly transition into the United States Merchant Marine. By simultaneously expanding veteran opportunities for great jobs at great wages while strengthening our Merchant Marine, this action embodies a key principle of the Trump administration: economic security is national security.

Second, and of even greater value, President Trumps executive order helps enable veterans apply their education and experience on military ships toward the mariner credentialing curriculum, thereby removing other costly barriers to entry.
Big Bravo Zulu to President Trump.
Brilliant!!!
It would be even better if we could build ships!
I think hell go down in history as one of out greatest presidents.
I’d do this in a second. I’d have done it in a second when I mustered out of the USCG as a DWO.
Well, I’m not embarrassed to admit I had to look it up. As of last Oct. the US Merchant Marine had 465 ships, 29,000 Deck Officers, 12,000 Engine Officers, and 28,000 Ratings.
The more those jobs can be filled by our great veterans, the better!
My son will be graduating from the Californian Maritime Academy in May and he is taking his licensing exams with the Coast Guard in fact this week. I am wondering how this is going to affect him as a merchant mariner. I wonder if it will make it more competitive and difficult. I know that is selfish and if this can provide careers for well-deserved military then I cannot complain.
There is more to it than that. There are the tug boats, dredges, pilot boats, off shore oil service vessels and more. Huge industry in need of this extremely qualified manpower.
He needs to do something similar regarding allowing Air Force combat controllers (theyre air traffic control certified) and military air traffic controllers (ATC) to compete on a LEVEL FIELD for civil service ATC positions. The last I read on this they were disregarding actual traffic control experience and training and giving preference for being disadvantaged in addition to coaching the disadvantaged on what magic words to say in their job interviews.
My son went to the Cal Maritime Academy and now is the port engineer for a Bay Area tug boat company.
Just one more little (at least under the radar, if not so little) things Trump has done that reveal hes doing everything he can to improve our nation and its readiness.
One of my favorite CPAC comments he made, was when he said something to this effect.
A lot of people think of me as a Republican, but to tell the truth I think of myself not so much as a Republican, but more as a Conservative. (paraphrased)
Think Dole, Bush, McCain, or Romney would have said that?
Of the 17 candidates running in 2016, Trump was and still is the only one who was/is actually a Conservative.
We’re going to need a bigger boat ...
What a Great idea!!!
Congrats!!!!! Go Keelhaulers!!!
The Numbers Are In: U.S. Maritime Workforce Grows to 650,000, Contributing $154 Billion Annually
March 4, 2019 by Mike Schuler
The U.S. maritime industry now employees nearly 650,000 Americans with jobs across all 50 states and contributes $154 billion to the nations economic growth annually, according to new economic and jobs data released by Transportation Institute (TI), a leading maritime association and advocacy group for national maritime policy in the United States.
Following last months news of 304,000 U.S. jobs created in January, the Transportation Institute on Monday announced a 30% increase in domestic maritime job creation enabled by the Jones Act, the U.S. requiring the transportation of goods between two U.S. points is carried out by American built, owned, and crewed vessels.
Yeppers, that's true... My Pop worked as a Merchant Marine on the Ohio and Mississippi rivers during WW2...
Who’s the starboard engineer?
Tug boats have two Caterpillar or EMD V-12 diesels so he gets to engineer both port and starboard.
> economic security is national security<
.
Great insight.
How anyone could look at a resume and say hmm, all you did was insert with Navy SEAL teams and guide combat aircraft in while under fire in shithole country most people arent allowed to know the name of, while shooting back and not getting a bomb dropped on your own head by accident, not really the experience we look for is beyond me.
