Tesla’s long strange taxpayer-subsidized trip could end in bankruptcy
American Thinker ^ | March 4, 2019 | Chriss Street

Tesla is abandoning its dealerships and slashing prices to survive after its monthly sales tanked by 77 percent since the December 31 cut in federal all-electric car subsidies.

Space X - competent
Tesla - good design, poor manufacturing and service
Solar City - going out of business
Boring Company - more of a joke than a real thing

Anything that requires a government subsidy is not economically viable and will eventually collapse.

Absolutely!!. Just like Amtrak. And Social Security./s

Actually, Ronald Reagan is supposedly the one who pointed out that the closest think to eternal life on this earth is a government bureaucracy (my paraphrase).
So in theory we can agree with you, but ..........

Reading the FR comments here takes me back some 20 years ago to the comments on Priii and other hybrid cars.

“Such a waste... they will never last.... a gimmick.... the battery will last 2 years and cost $7,000 to replace.... only idiot greenies will want one.... etc. etc.”

My ire is directed at the politicians and the crony capitalists.

My only gripe about Tesla is the same gripe I have about any other private-sector company sucking on the government’s teat.

I noticed that very often defenders of Tesla seem to take it as a personal criticism of Tesla when I disparage electric cars and government theft of my money used to pick winners and losers in the private sector.

Yeah try driving out the mountains are in the desert in one of those stupid things you’d be screwed
Or worse yet driving around begging somebody for some her to plug it in which it only takes a 240 V outlet good luck

“Saw one of the newly designed Tesla’s on the road over the weekend. Fugly!”

Living in So Cal not a day goes by that I don’t see multiplayer Tesla’s on the road as would be expected for the car Capital of the world. Without a doubt the front end of a Model 3 look like it came out of the 1970’s American Motors / Citroen design studios. Homely is an understatement.

It’s not just the cars but the way the business is run that’s innovative. They don’t use dealerships. They don’t buy advertising from the corrupt media. Eighty percent of all problems can either be fixed over the air or by a mobile service tech.

A search for Tesla and innovations returns a lot of results. In particular I think their recent computer upgrade built on an in house chip is noteworthy.

Not true, Mr. Truth.

The can easily be charged with a simple 110 VAC extension cord.
That said, it is a long slow process.
But it does work.

Also note, most of the time you go up a mountain, you also come down. you regen on the downhill.
Not 100%, but better than the 0% regen with ICE.

LOL.
I can coast downhill at zero energy costs.

TRUE.
But how far will you travel beyond the downgrade?
And each touch of the brakes you are burning energy, making your rotors warm.

Regen saves it for later.

I don’t need to. I am against all subsidies and “incentives” as they are unequally applied.

Sorry, but the facts are they could have stayed smaller and concentrated on the higher end and more expensive cars.

The problem with that is people who spend a lot of money on cars want luxury, performance or both. Expensive Tesla's offer neither luxury nor performance. The 3 second 0-60 times on airport runways was a ruse - you only get to do that a few times before the car starts failing and overheating. You can't take them to the track- too heavy and they degrade on a road race after a few minutes.

Then there's poor QC and styling issues.

You make it sound so bleak and gloomy.

Whatever happened to Tesla’s higher end models?

And then there will be the new Roadster:

“Meanwhile....... The Tesla space craft docked with the ISS and has eliminated the need for Russian rockets to take our astronauts into spaceetig”

how is that relevant to tax-payer subsidized luxury golf carts for hollywood celebs and other rich people?

Converting the original energy to electricity and then charging batteries is inherently going to cost energy. Fossil fuels are plentiful and excellent stores of energy. You drive your electric go cart, I’ll stick with my diesel.
