Popular because it is so dangerous that the only time regular folks can make the trip in safety is during scheduled events. Otherwise you can be assaulted, robbed or worse if you go alone or in a small unarmed group. And even if armed I'm not sure you'd come out a winner against an organized gang from the other side of the border. Best not to try.
