Despite having one of the highest percentages of registered Democrats for counties in New Mexico, Rio Arriba [County] has joined more than 20 counties and municipalities throughout the state in recent weeks in passing resolutions opposing proposed gun legislation and declaring themselves a “Second Amendment Sanctuary.”
This year a bill to require background checks on nearly all gun sales, even those done privately, has passed the New Mexico Senate and is moving forward in the House, where a similar bill has already passed. It was sponsored by Sen. Richard Martinez, a Democrat who represents Rio Arriba County.
Lawmakers have also introduced a bill to allow a judge to order guns removed from someone who presents a serious emergency risk to themselves or others, and another to bar people who have been convicted of misdemeanor domestic violence from owning a gun.
The state has 33 counties, and sheriffs from 29 of them have stood up in opposition to the legislation.
“We felt that our stance was falling on deaf ears, it wasn’t making any momentum and people were not paying attention,” said Cibola County Sheriff Tony Mace, the chairman of the New Mexico Sheriffs’ Association. “So what we decided is let’s get counties to draft a resolution to say ‘Hey, our sheriffs support people’s Second Amendment rights.”
This week, Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham responded to the sanctuary county movement by saying the background checks are constitutional and law enforcement cannot pick and choose which bills to enforce. She called the sheriffs lobbying against the legislation “rogue sheriffs.”
“Opponents of firearm safety measures can’t debate on the factual merits of these bills, so they turn to hyperbole, falsehood and fear-mongering,” Lujan Grisham wrote on Twitter. “Thus, we now have a few ‘sanctuary’ counties – political posturing & dangerous, cynical pandering.”

What about immigration laws?
same issue in Colorado. 58 of 64 sheriffs said they would not enforce the magazine ban. but we are ruled by the Bolshevik cities of Denver, Boulder, Ft Collins.
Looks like Santa Fe and Albuquerque and Las Cruces are for gun control. That would be about 700,000 out of 2 million total. Not impossible to overcome, but an uphill fight.
Like most of the country, the cities totally dominate - and our political division is really urban versus everyone else. Nuke the cities and the rest of the country would be pretty good...

It surprises me to hear this... Rio Arriba is hardcore democrat..
This can be metaphorically scaled up to the blue states on the east and west coasts plus Illinois, and the red states in the heartland in between. Our wise founders who wrote the constitution solved it by creating two houses of Congress thus preventing tyranny of the masses.
Unfortunately, those same cities and urban areas are pushing legislation that would eliminate the electoral college and require electors to vote for whoever has the most votes nationwide, no matter the statewide results. New Mexico is joining Colorado with such legislation which would give the high population states control of the outcome of national elections.

Gee, I thought we had a representative government.
Just like NV. Vegas/Clark county screws the rest of the state like it or not. And we don’t. But dems have super in the assembly, one vote short of that in the senate, dem gov, dem Lt gov, dem AG. Probably not ever going back.
