SANTA FE The Senate overwhelmingly adopted legislation Thursday that would streamline the approval process for applicants who want the less stringent option offered under New Mexicos two-tiered drivers license system.
Supporters said the proposal, Senate Bill 278, would reduce confusion and make other improvements to the system in which New Mexico offers one license compliant with the U.S. Real ID Act and a second option not intended for federal purposes.
The second option, now called a driving authorization card, would be renamed the standard drivers license.
Senate Bill 278 also would repeal a requirement for some applicants to provide fingerprints when they seek the standard drivers license or identification card.
It just makes the whole process much simpler, said Sen. Gerald Ortiz y Pino, D-Albuquerque, and it should greatly reduce the number of constituent complaints directed at us.
The Senate voted 31-9 in favor of the legislation, which now heads to the House.
Opponents said creation of the driving authorization card was part of a 2016 compromise aimed at preventing undocumented immigrants from obtaining licenses but still allowing them to drive legally.
Now were going back on that, said Sen. Mark Moores, an Albuquerque Republican who opposed the bill.
The two-tiered system was also intended to bring the state into compliance with the Real ID Act.

Go to the right MA DMV office, to get a fraudulent Puerto Rican birth certificate. Use that (and a couple-grand) to get a fraudulent MA drivers license.
:-(
Good points.
Among other things, this is part of the “Reconquista”.
Yes,wetbacks can get licenses in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. ;-)
It's worse than that.Go to the DMV,present a real Bangladesh birth certificate and you walk out with a license.
No bribe required.
WHY IS NEW MEXICO ALLOWING CITIZENS FROM OTHER COUNTRIES
WHO ENTER ILLEGALLY GRANT THEM RIGHTS
THAT THEIR COUNTRY DENY US HAVING
WHEN WE ENTER THEIRS LEGALLY ???
It’s time we consider illegal entry by any person who is a non Mexican citizen illegally entering the United States through the US Mexican border a defacto Mexican citizen with limited Mexican constitutional rights subject to their laws while transiting. As well as any Mexican citizen doing so.
Subject to reciprocal citizen treatment a citizen of the United States receives in Mexico through the Mexican constitution on citizenship .
Besides being unable to vote one must also be a citizen to own land and Mexico is very restrictive about granting citizenship. Because of that a US citizen besides not being able to vote, and cannot have title in their name to any land property in Mexico. And until that is changed the US and the affected state should consider making that reciprocal.prohibiting citizens of Mexico or countries with similar restrictions from doing both voting and land ownership.. .
I wont be surprised if by the end of it, they will have joined the idiocy in Colorado and assigning our electoral votes to the national popular vote for the presidency.+
Not as long as they vote heavily Democrat.
Simultaneously, other legislation will automatically make everyone who gets a license a registered voter.

Thus joining CA as Mexico’s second colony.
The same rules apply to the citizens of Californiafornicator.
I renewed last October and could not find my certified copy of my birth certificate.
I have it now and will have to go back to get the full license to be able to fly.
My main gripe is I had two expired passports with all the data, which has not changed, and I have the military veterans notice on my license. I had a veterans’s office employee enter all of the data, two years ago with my official birth certificate, valid pass ports and other VA data. None of that data was valid for the new all inclusive Ca. Driver’s license.
LIBs are all lunatics...malignant lunatics who ruin everything they touch. There are NO exceptions.
Amazing.
Makes one wonder how many DMV workers across America are getting richer with these new opportunities for them.
My wife has two lunch groups with long time lady friends. All are in their late 70’s.
She was telling them about the ordeal I went through with the DMV and how you can’t get an appointment for months past your birthday. Then all and the documented data you need to renew your California driver’s license before you can even start the process.
None of them believed her until one of these friends tried to make an appointment on her home computer with the local DMV. Now, she is panicked and spreading the word about no appointments.
