OLYMPIA Washington dairy farmers and fruit growers would have to report to retailers whether they use slaves under a bill endorsed Thursday by Democrats on the Senate Labor and Commerce Committee.
Farm groups, for the record, say they oppose slavery, as well as human trafficking and peonage two other forms of servitude producers would have to report.
At a hearing last week, farm lobbyists said the bill was offensive and asked the committee to kill it.
The committee excluded some commodities, but kept in dairy and fruit. By a party line vote, the Democratic majority recommended the bill to the full Senate.
"It's still an attack on farmers," Washington Farm Bureau director of government relations Tom Davis said. "It impugns the character of an entire industry."
Introduced by Seattle Democrat Rebecca Saldana, Senate Bill 5693 would require farmers to report any incidents of slavery, peonage and human trafficking to retailers with more than $200 million in global sales.

Illegal Trafficking includes the use of illegal aliens, I would imagine.
Are dems admitting they shouldn’t be given work finally?
I wonder what they’ll do when some Muslim reports owning a few slaves?
So, if they sell to retailers with LESS than $200 million in global sales, then they don't have to report any slavery?............................Okay, got it..............
We already have federal laws on the books requiring EVERY employer to verify the status of each new hire & confirm they are legally allowed to work in the US. How many redundant laws do we need to actually get it done?
So Blue State Washington is enslaving people? Its in their DNA!
We don’t need no stinkin’ peonage.
Did not know that and should have. Thanks.
Well Rs are going to vote on a bill this week to let it be known that you can’t kill babies outside the womb after a failed abortion.
Well, uh, YEAH.
That’s called murder by EVERYONE’S definition.
Redundant laws everywhere even when no one is listening to the ones we have.
Aren’t they called “Interns” now?
Perhaps the state of Washington should be ordered to report on how many people are forced to work and labor to support other people via taxation?
Maybe THAT form of slavery should be abolished, too!!!
Want to see a liberal’s head spin?
1) get them to agree that slavery was and is bad
2) get them to explain socialism
3) point out that just as the master takes the work of the slave, in a socialist system, the government takes the work of the citizen.
4) If they object, ask them to describe how socialism is different from slavery.
Back door to unionizing farm workers in Eastern WA.
The Left wants the entire State, not just Seattle area
They have a lot of Muslims out there ?
Guess they can’t do business with m*slim countries, where slavery is rampant.
As far as I’m concerned, employing illegal aliens is akin to employing slaves.
Excellent catch. Reminds me of signing up for a class about 15 years ago at the College of St. Rose and their vaccination requirement for everyone taking five credits or more. Who knew under five credits was a guarantee of viral invulnerability?
Their answer: Shutup.
Laws? We don’t need any more stinking laws. Did it ever occur to anyone that laws are being made by the rich? How many poor people do you know who are making the laws? Sure they vote for them, but who is holding their hands when they do? r/ I guess they’ll have an underground railroad operating again?
Aren’t we all slaves to Big Brother?
That right there is funny
