Worker visas in doubt as Trump immigration crackdown widens
AP via Sacramento Bee ^ | February 25th, 2019 | By MATT SEDENSKY

NEW YORK - Immigrants with specialized skills are being denied work visas or seeing applications get caught up in lengthy bureaucratic tangles under federal changes that some consider a contradiction to President Donald Trump's promise of a continued pathway to the U.S. for the most talented foreigners.

Getting what's known as an H-1B visa has never been a sure thing — the number issued annually is capped at 85,000 and applicants need to enter a lottery to even be considered. But some immigration attorneys, as well as those who hire such workers, say they've seen unprecedented disruptions in the approval process since Trump took office in 2017.

"You see all these arguments that we want the best and the brightest coming here," said John Goslow, an immigration attorney in Ann Arbor, Michigan. "Yet we're seeing a full-frontal assault on just all aspects of immigration."

For American businesses, there is a bottom-line impact.

Link Wilson, an architect who co-founded a firm in Bloomington, Minnesota, said finding enough qualified workers within the U.S. has been a problem for years. That's due to a shortage of architects, but also because his firm needs people with experience developing senior housing. He said employers who turn to international applicants do so as a last resort, putting up with legal fees and ever-expanding visa approval times because they have no other choice.

More winning. Good on Trump and his admin.

The bottom line for Mr. Link Wilson is that he, and those like him, don't want to pay the going rate for architects.

Same with Silicon Valley and tech workers.

There are PLENTY of Americans with the skills if you're willing to pay a reasonable wage for the region you're living in.

But weigh that against the amount of money the U.S. taxpayers will be saving without having to pay for free stuff for all the illegals. I don’t see nothing but good stuff happening here.

There are plenty of American workers currently available, currently qualified, or easily trained into any of these positions. There is little to no excuse for any American company to hire a foreign worker. Never has been never will be.

More scare tactics by the all leftist layers guilds. I doubt there’s much “disruption”. But there should be.

“but also because his firm needs people with experience developing senior housing.”

I’m calling BS. There are plenty of architects who are Americans to do this job.

People with true unique skills will still be able to get their visa, as it should be.

The problem is it’s abused to get cheap labor that isn’t really unique, just cheaper.

Yeah, like there’s something truly unique to senior housing that a competent architect of any stripe could not handle.

It’s his BS story, and he’s sticking to it.

” just cheaper”

That’s the core issue.

They are not being denied work. They shouldn’t be here in the first place. The H1B is responsible for huge numbers of AMERICANS being out of work. The Americans had specialized skills. But they were Americans.

Major corporations made the decision to hire non-Americans. I witnessed this with my two eyes. It is indisputable.

Trump’s action is too late to help the Americans, but it is welcome nevertheless.

AP, huh? Did they ever do a story on all the Americans put out of work by greedy companies bringing in foreigners to replace them just to lower costs?

Maybe they would if the AP owners brought in foreigners to replace the reporters...

“Yeah, like there’s something truly unique to senior housing that a competent architect of any stripe could not handle.“

All that ADA stuff is really hard. So hard only an architect from Pakistan can do it. They’re the real experts.

Awarding these via a lottery is a DUMB idea!
If we’re going to do it at all it should be merit based
like Australia and Canada. Cherry pick the cream of the
crop and don’t get stuck with random slugs.

“They’re the real experts.”

That’s what their certified Resume says.

Along with specialized courses from the University of Islamabad on the unique aspects of Senior Housing in civilized countries.

Awarding them in ALL cases is a anti-American and dumb idea.

There are other visas for the truly gifted scientist, artist etc.

The H-1b is used EXCLUSIVELY to undermine skilled American workers.

Fixed it.

His job posting says something like: PhD in Architecture, 10 years proven experience. Ability to translate high-level conceptual drawings into detailed engineering drawings and specification in AutoCAD. $65,000 per year and great benefits!

And he’ll get 100 resumes from Asia that are a direct reflection of that job spec.

All BS, of course.

Excellent. I’ve spoken about this many times. I’ve seen it in several companies but especially the large banks and especially Indians. The banks can hire them for cheaper so they stuff their buildings full of as many as they can get - and not for high tech jobs either but for regular white collar/middle management type banking jobs. There is simply no way the banks cannot find qualified Americans for these jobs. This is an open and shut case of trying to crush the bargaining power of Americans in their own country. This needs to be stopped.

You stinking globalists want your H1Bs or do you other kind of globalists want to stop the wall; it is a choice, either the rich only prosper from illegal immigration or they prosper from the noose-like H1Bs that usually lead to citizenship. I say Trump is going to split the illegal immigration lobby in two fractions that must compete for cheaper than legal labor.
