Critics are calling for the John Wayne Airport in Southern California to be renamed after a 1971 "Playboy" interview resurfaced this week.
A Los Angeles Times opinion piece from earlier this week highlighted opinions the former movie star voiced in the interview on black people, gay people and Native Americans.
Wayne, who was 63 at the time of the interview, said he believed in "white supremacy until the blacks are educated to a point of responsibility."
He also mentioned "tests" which proved black people did not have "requisite background" to attend college.
When asked which films he called "perverted," Wayne listed 1969s Easy Rider and Midnight Cowboy, before using anti-gay slurs to discuss the films.
Wayne said that Native Americans were "were selfishly trying to keep" the U.S. "for themselves."
Orange County today is such an economically and ethnically diverse community that its hard to justify asking any member of that community to board planes at an airport named after an outspoken racist and homophobe, with his strutting statue occupying a central niche in front of the concourse, columnist Michael Hiltzik wrote for the LA Times.
Some have come to Wayne's defense, saying that it is unfair to call out an interview from 50 years ago.
Removing his name from Orange Countys airport now only validates what many Americans are coming to believe: You cant say anything anymore, darn it, without being discovered and punished by the mob, Madeline Fry wrote in the Washington Examiner.

I have never seen either of these films and I have no plans to do so. I'm pretty sure "Midnight Cowboy" is about midnight, but it's probably not about a cowboy.
well let’s just have a war on John Wayne, shall we? after all, almost all of America’s culture, heros, landmarks and notables are all under attack in a febble attempt to start another civil war..
But for giggles, let’s just walk back in time a few decades and see what people thought about, oh, I dunno, gays:
The mothers conduct is illegal and immoral and renders her an unfit parent, Judge Buford M. Parsons Jr., of Henrico County Circuit Court, said in 1993, endorsing a decision earlier that year by a juvenile court judge to give custody of Ms. Mattess 2-year-old son, Tyler, to her mother, Kay Bottoms.
The Virginia Court of Appeals returned custody to Ms. Mattes in 1994, but the next year the Virginia Supreme Court, in a 4-to-3 ruling, gave custody back to Kay Bottoms.
We have previously said that living daily under conditions stemming from active lesbianism practiced in the home may impose a burden upon a child by reason of the social condemnation attached to such an arrangement, Justice A. Christian Compton wrote in the majority opinion.
We do not retreat from that statement, the opinion added.”

Someone should take these “critics” through a cancer ward, particularly a children’s cancer ward. After they see what gruesome horror these stricken patients have to deal with, then let’s hear them gripe about “how awful” a 50 year old remark in a magazine really is and how actually important. These people are as shallow as a piece of paper, utterly vapid and self-absorbed. Why should such mental defectives get to rename an airport named for an American icon? They need to dial back their hyperbole about a lot of nothing and get some perspective.
It’ll be coming, just wait.
MY JWA story.
Flying Sacramento to OC with a co-worker. Told her the airport since not was named after wayne is in the shape of a cowboy hat. They crown was the tower and the rim was the concourse and the gates. She was very interested and squirmed for a view. Finally when we landed you could se it wasn’t a cowboy hat. I sill have bruise in my arm.
All the good Spanish Greasers that those towns are named after enslaved and murdered the hell out of the local redskins, almost to the point of extinction.
This latest round of destroy Americans monuments, flag, icons, and history, suddenly surfaced at nearly the same time it became obvious in the national news that Smollett was being exposed as a black racist, liar and complete fraud.
Funny how these things just pop up.
If these creeps try to degface Jonn Wayne airport, then they need some hot pb therapy. These creeps cana’t keep tearing down our culture with the attack on the Confederate statues and now John Wayne. Is there a Ronald Reagan airport? Will that be next on the chopping block?
I’m afraid to think who they might want to name to replace John Wayne airport. I’m thinking it would probably end up being someone much worse than what folks considered John Wayne to be.
>Intelligent analysis requires judging a man by the standards of his time. Playing gotcha with old quotes is just childish cultural Marxism.
It’s called “cultural imperialism”. The left judges the past by contemporary standards. It’s the mother of all cheap shots and proves those narcissists incapable of placing themselves in someone else’s shoes. Cultural imperialism is what the leftists conjur as Western technology becomes the name of the game and rightfully renders all non-technological cultures into museum pieces. Fortunately for the memory of obsolete memes, Western technological culture is the only culture that has managed to invent museums.
That article should also be a stand alone thread, then link both threads to each other, for reference and sharing.
Sanger’s second husband was Noah Slee.
Well they shouldn’t really worry about renaming the airport afterall in 10 years time AOC says there will be no more air travel.
I do remember that murder; it was shocking because it showed how far the ferals could go to commit crime (originally a carjacking, if I recall correctly). That is an exclusive mall, and one of the animals borrowed his mother’s car to get there.
I’ve only been to the Lautenberg station once, and it was crowded only because there was no parking yet at the new Giants Stadium (the old stadium was still being demolished). We had to get there by train after parking at the Lautenberg station.
Yes, those people left NYC for a suburban life with lower costs (where they could have cars); now that dream is crumbling here. Taxes are higher and car insurance is through the roof...
Yes, it was a hijacking originally. A couple, I think, were returning to their car after Christmas shopping. Yes, a very exclusive mall - one of the best in NJ.
Well, I’ve left. I’ll only be back to NYC to visit family or catch a show.
I’m sure there’s as many different ways Indians viewed “their lands” as they were tribes. My point was John Wayne was using it as a White Man vs Red Man. Frankly, when it all boils down to “Can you fend what’s yours. If not, it’s not yours for much longer”
None of the tribes are able to use or control their lands in traditional ways. The federal government set up laws regarding Indian land that automatically divided ownership between an Indians descendants when they died if they did not have a will. At the time they did this, few indians had any idea what a will was. In a few generations such a way that the land became so rapidly subdivided that it was nigh impossible to buy or sell it, or to make any economic use of it because you need permission from every single part owner involved. My own family owns a plot of land that I believe is shared between something like 130+ different co-owners. The only upside is that we don’t pay taxes on it. It’s one of the major reasons that American Indian reservations are so damn dysfunctional. Fortunately, I don’t currently live on reservation and I deeply resent the left’s attempts to make the whole country just like one.
P.S.
I love John Wayne, I grew up watching him. and I pretty much have nothing critical to say about him.
