You Give Apps Sensitive Personal Information. Then They Tell Facebook
Wall Street Journal ^ | 2/22/2019 | Sam Schechner and Mark Secada

Millions of smartphone users confess their most intimate secrets to apps, including when they want to work on their belly fat or the price of the house they checked out last weekend. Other apps know users’ body weight, blood pressure, menstrual cycles or pregnancy status.

Unbeknown to most people, in many cases that data is being shared with someone else: Facebook Inc.

The social-media giant collects intensely personal information from many popular smartphone apps just seconds after users enter it, even if the user has no connection to Facebook, according to testing done by The Wall Street Journal. The apps often send the data without any prominent or specific disclosure, the testing showed.

Very nice   :-)

My cell use is so prodigious that it costs me ~ $30/year.

Of course, that means having to be able to read a map, foregoing satellite navigation (oh! the huge manatee!).
Also, not walking/driving/sleeping/eating with a 'smart'phone epoxied to the side of my head.

Still, it suits me just fine.
When/if it dies, I'll be on eBay for another one.

I got that last spring (2018) when I switched from a landline phone to a cell phone. I’d said for years that I’d get a cell phone when the usage got to be less than a landline. Thanks to Consumer Cellular, that day finally arrived. I have no regrets and haven’t looked back.

I am using a very slow laptop and at the bottom of the screen I have time to read the comms to the sites I visit. I have seen where the site sends info to facebook. $$$$$$$ I must be very important! I hate to tell them, though, I hate to shop and love the minimalist lifestyle. But they probably figured that out.

Try to explain that to normal people and they will think you’re crazy.

I'd guess that 'normal people' have no idea what is in the bible.

Does anyone WITH a smartphone ever call you on your old phone?

;^)

Prepaid phones provide better privacy than phones from carriers.
In comparison, a burner provides superior privacy.
However, in light of recent leaks on the US government’s domestic spying program,
it appears that burners can be legally traced. It’s just a lot more difficult.

I am like that too.

I wasn’t involved in setting this up when I worked for Intel but I heard about it.
They got Federal $$$$ to create it.
