I remember when military Mom’s were complaining to their son’s and daughter’s company commanders just about anything.....the Army began to weaken then due to pressure from civilians who want the protection but not the discomfort of serving.
A friend of mine who was in the USAF Reserves as an Air Policeman at Travis AFB told me a good story. His reserve unit specialized in base security. In August 1990, his unit’s senior NCO notified him by telephone that they were going on alert. The NCO simply added that it was important to bring ALL of their gear to this alert. Once at Travis, they boarded transport aircraft, and flew to the east coast with all their equipment, being told that the alert had turned into an exercise, but one with strict operational security (no phone calls, etc). From the east coast, they flew to the Azores to refuel, still told this was an exercise. He said rumors were rampant about their eventual destination; they hoped it was Spain or Portugal, with lots of senoritas. When they got off the planes at their destination, they noted that the air temperature was really hot. They were then assembled and briefed: The “exercise” was actually a combat deployment. They were at an airfield in Saudi Arabia as one of the first U.S. units to arrive for what became “Desert Shield”.
What are the reasons for non-deployment?.................

Sometimes it is three hots on a cot.
We should be deploying all,of our troops right here in the US. Theres no need to have them deployed anywhere else (with the exception of the Navy). Theres no declared war anywhere. Bring them home. If war comes, we can be where we need to be quick enough.
The military is not a jobs program. It’s there to employ the military option for the advancement of U.S. National Interests. I remember years ago as a young Marine Sergeant who had already been on numerous deployments standing in line at the base credit union and seeing a Marine Master Sergeant in charlies. This uniform, the Marine wears his ribbons. I was incensed when I saw him. Here was a man who had been in the Marine Corps at least 15 years (if not more) and he had one sea service deployment ribbon. That means in all those years he had only been on one deployment. If you can’t do your job in the civilian world, what happens? You’re shown the door.
In my opinion this is just one of those nothing burger news article, 1000 of 350,000 is about what 1/3 of 1%.
My gut feeling is probably 90% of airman that reach it to retirement never ever deployed in their service time. I may be wrong about that. The Air Force is totally different then the Army, Navy, or Marines were deployment is very common, like I said I may be wrong about that though.
Waiting around for their sex reassignment surgery I guess.
That's what we do, and we all knew what to expect.
Pregnancy ...
By experience I know that an additional problem with a generally peace time military - most U.S. military personnel today have not seen and will not see duty in any active combat theater - is that “deployable” does not actually mean “combat ready”. Most soldiers (unless things have drastically changed) never see fitness training again after basic training. And if they have never gone to any combat zone, being fit is not imposed on them by what military experience they are getting.
On only the rarest of experiences - I found - did “peace time” unit commanders get their units involved in keeping fit and keeping their basic combat skills honed.
Was there a boom in pregnancies?
It is about time. I remember one mission as an Airman just before Christmas the Chief was like sent him, he has no family...
Every well rounded Marine is deployed more than once on the average. That said I have known a few that only went on deployment once and were sent stateside by the Corps, mostly to training functions. I had a gunny that worked for me that was an expert on some weapons system. When he was in he was chomping at the bit to be deployed but the Corps insisted that he stay and train the next generation. This was during the 90’s. Of course there are the slackers that figure out how to work the system - just like every job.
Most airmen deployed. Lots depends on the specialty. Security forces? Deploy a LOT! Supply? A lot less.
The Army deployed a lot more people, of course. But no way 90% of airmen go a career without deploying. We were also deploying & monitoring the no-fly zones over Iraq for years where the Army didn’t deploy much.

Pre-Post-traumatic Stress Disorder
I wasn’t Air Force. I never knew someone in the military could refuse a forward deployment. Back when I was in, the command tried to be as helpful as possible if an individual had some extreme circumstances that temporarily would cause hardship. In fact back in that same day those tours of duty were know as “Hardship Tours” signifying families were not eligible to accompany.
The “flaps” always were in the country club service for most of them. Having said that I am in no way denigrating anyone’s military service to our Republic.
I think what they are talking about here as far as deployment is actually assigned to a unit and doing a job.
Rather than waiting in the wings because you had your pecker lopped off for free on bammy’s new medical plan for trannies.
There was this Airman who was on number 5 at one of the base I was station at. She has never deployed in 10 years, then complain and got out of it when they attempted to deploy her.
