Pope Francis has restored priestly faculties to 94-year-old Fr. Ernesto Cardenal, who had been suspended a divinas in 1984 for holding a cabinet position in Nicaraguas Sandinista government, in violation of canon law.
The Holy Father has graciously granted the absolution of all canonical censures imposed on Rev. Father Ernesto Cardenal, accepting the request he had recently made to him through the Pontifical Representative in Nicaragua, to be readmitted to the exercise of the priestly ministry, said a February 18 statement from the Apostolic Nunciature of Nicaragua.
He was suspended a divinas by Pope Saint John Paul II in 1984 for violating canon law by assuming a public office that involves the exercise of civil power.
Several other priests including Ernestos brother Fernando, Miguel DEscoto and Edgard Parrales were also suspended.
John Paul II publicly reprimanded Cardenal when he visited Nicaragua in 1983. In a now-famous photo, the Polish pope can be seen with a serious expression, standing before the Nicaraguan priest who is genuflecting and smiling.

Frankie is signaling that it’s safe to dive back into the waters of Liberation Theology.
True. He is upending everything JPII stood for. On the family, etc.
JPII was humiliated when he visited Nicaragua.
Meanwhile, he was instrumental in bring Poland out of the Soviet orbit, and was a big step to bringing down the Soviet Union.
Maybe, but in this case I wonder if the canonical censure is even relevant anymore. Apparently this dope hasn’t held a civil government office since the 1990s.
It’s not Cardenal himself that is the issue, it’s the signal this is sending to others.
“Maybe, but in this case I wonder if the canonical censure is even relevant anymore.”
He’s a leftwad. That alone should disqualify a man for the priesthood.
Under Francis, this is okay as long as it's a communist government.
Anyone here remember Father Robert Drinan?
He was a Liberal Democrat Congressman from the Boston area.
To his credit when Pope John II issued this edict he obeyed and resigned from Congress.
Cardenal was sanctioned because he refused to do the same.
Just showing sympathy to a fellow traveler.
