That’s odd, considering how US aid was the only reason the Soviets stayed in the war. Also, while Americans and Brits were dying in the Pacific, the USSR maintained a cease-fire with Japan until the end of the war (when they stormed Manchuria and set the stage for the Red victories in China and Vietnam, as well as the war in Korea).
Not to mention that they started the damn war with their Non-Aggression Pact, in the hopes that England and France would lose to Germany.
Then there was their invasions of Finland and the Baltic Countries.
The worst part is that history judges many Eastern Europeans for siding with the Axis, without ever considering the choice the Western Allies left them: Hitler or Stalin.
Churchill didn’t think he was played. He recognized that he has no real power there and it is Roosevelt being played by Stalin.
Also, this is one incident - there were no other pogroms at this period in time. Let's put this in perspective
That 1500 was not all "anti-semitic violence" - the majority was due to the post-war brigandry and violence that was not directed specifically at ANY group.
This is playing with numbers
He had power, but had to use it to focus on keeping the empire. Roosevelt was allegedly just so sick he was a non-factor (but who knows?).
I read something that claimed Churchill said something like “Why did they send a dying Roosevelt? He just gave Stalin everything he asked for and more and I couldn’t do anything”.
Supposedly it is from the memoirs of his secretary, but I am not a history buff.
That’s very interesting, and I could believe it. Unfortunately Churchill had to focus on reigning in parts of the empire that had witnessed a non-white country whip the British (at least early on). It was inevitable that India in particular was going to seek full independence; many Indian troops were used to fend off Japanese attacks against the colony, and the significance of that wasn’t lost on them - Britain couldn’t protect them.
