Iran's parliament speaker has said that an attack that killed 27 members of Iran's elite Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) was "planned and carried out from inside Pakistan.
In the remarks carried by the state-run IRNA news agency on February 17, Ali Larijani said that Pakistan should answer for its involvement in the attack.
The comments come as Irans Foreign Ministry summoned the Pakistani ambassador on February 17 to protest the assault, one of the deadliest attacks on Iranian security forces in years.
Islamabad condemned the bombing but has not commented on Tehrans allegations.
The IRGC says a suicide bomber on February 13 drove an explosives-laden vehicle into a bus that was transporting troops in Sistan-Baluchistan Province.
A militant Sunni Muslim separatist group called Jaish al-Adl (Army of Justice) claimed responsibility for the attack.
Sistan-Baluchistan is a volatile area near Iran's borders with Pakistan and Afghanistan where militant groups and drug smugglers frequently operate.
The province is populated mainly by Sunni Muslim ethnic Baluchis.
Tehran has repeatedly accused the United States, Israel, and U.S. ally Saudi Arabia of backing Sunni militia groups that carry out attacks against Iranian security forces, charges those countries have denied.
Sunni-Shia action.
All things being equal, I’d expect them to blame the USA or Israel, just because.
Reminds me of that hilarious nuclear war game we had for the Amiga.
You mean it wasnt the great satan and Israel?.....
By Trump.
Ill sell popcorn for the Iran (Shiite) versus Pakistan (Sunni) coming war. Its gonna be great.
Isnt that those two religions whose major disagreement is about which end of the egg to cut open? Small end or big end?
” drug smugglers frequently operate.”
Found it!!
They are more loyal to the mullahs tgan the regular military.
Not so unlikely. Within the decades of events related to the rise of and war with the Taliban is a contest between Pakistani interests and Iran over influence in Afghanistan. Yes, Pashtun-Pakistani interests have seemed to have the upper hand in that, and the reports of Iran-supported interests in Afghanistan have been fewer, but that does not mean the contest has ever ended.
Iran has had trouble in its part of Baluchistan for decades.
Not a highly visible conflict, usually, but good for a number of casualties every year.
And of course the problem comes from the Paki part of Baluchistan, where else? The Paki Baluchs are also a problem for the Pakis. Another not too well known problem.
All these countries are collections of ethnic and religious groups that harass each other constantly.
The IRGC does not possess sufficent organic armor or artillery for proper combined arms attacks (they leave that to the regular Iranian military, who are not used much outside Iran).
But when they are defending, they can dig in, pepper urban terrain with IEDs, and use that terrain to their advantage, requiring the attacker (us) to pry them out and use our own air and artillery to dig them out.
