Key Democrats introduced legislation Wednesday that would allow people 50 and older to buy into Medicare, saying its an incremental step to universal coverage thats stage-ready and easier to pass than more ambitious liberal plans.
They also said its sorely needed, since Americans aged 50 to 64 tend to develop medical issues and get knocked around by private insurers.
Some constituents are even putting off an early retirement because they must cling to their job-based insurance, according to Sen. Debbie Stabenow, Michigan Democrat, who filed the bill with Sen. Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin.
So many people say theyre holding their breath until age 65. I want people to be able to stop holding their breath, she said.
The senators were joined by Rep. Brian Higgins, New York Democrat who backed Rep. Nancy Pelosi to become speaker after she told him he could lead the House push for a Medicare buy-in.
He said Medicare would be more affordable than what older people find on Obamacares insurance exchanges, and that it makes sense to leverage and existing program instead of reinventing the wheel.
Medicare is the best public option that already exists, he said.
The Democrats prized 2010 health law Obamacare managed to cover roughly 20 million Americans, yet nearly 30 million remain uninsured in the U.S., prompting lawmakers to float fixes.

If you like your doctor you can’t keep him, or your lower costs.
It’s a step toward bankrupting the U.S., that’s what it is. Put that right alongside free college for everyone, paying for every darn thing for illegals, etc.
Incrementalism
Sadly I think this one WILL pass. Sooner rather than later.
Insurance companies would like nothing better than to pass off middle-aged people with higher health care costs to the government.
Geez. Perhaps they could start a little slower and try 62, when a person can legitimately take a social security retirement. There should be an affordable bridge from 62-65.
So, she wants old people to stop breathing all together.............
I really like what Trump is doing. He’s working to lower medical costs directly.
Hate to say it, but this is a winning issue for Dems
The reaction to this stupidity will be that even fewer doctors and hospitals will accept Medicare. I think that’s the true motivation of these pixies. Bring down Medicare. We’ve got 52 million illegals firing up their “caravans” to invade America. Elderly Americans are about to get it stuck to them by the “democrats” again.
Lets wrap this Freepathon up, Folks!
Sorry to ruin your day, were $22t in debt. The country has no choice than to slash spending and raise taxes. In addendum, its time to sell federal land and assets. All proceeds go to paying off the debt.
I thought you could already buy into health insurance???
They're gonna have to pay double to make up 15 years....and how will they be billed....especially if they're not working.
We're right back to Medicaid.
The moral equivalent of pedophiles offering candy to children . . . great abuse ensues after you take the goodies.
This would certainly make retiring early a lot easier. At 58, I have plenty $$ to live off of, but no idea what my healthcare costs might be.
Not so....they’re going to have to pay...Medicare is not FREE. Medicaid is.
When taxes are cut Nancy always worries about where the money will come from so where’s the money for this coming from
Hell wid dat...just wait til AOC gives you free stuff for life for free!
The original authors of Medicare envisioned that Congress would just start gradually dropping the enrollment age a few years at a time until private insurers were crowded out of the marketplace.
Like a lot of their grand designs, Reagan’s election in 1980 threw the plans into the deep freeze.
