Pro-pot activists not sure they trust 2020 Democrats claiming to favor legalization

As Democrats hurl themselves into the 2020 presidential fray, marijuana reformers are finding an unprecedented number of new friends and apologetic former enemies, some of whom they aren’t sure if they can trust.

Among the new converts are Sens. Kamala Harris of California and Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota, both former prosecutors, while vintage anti-drug warrior and former Vice President Joe Biden apologized for helping implement harsh drug penalties.

“What they plan to do is more important than the role they may have played in the past,” said Marijuana Policy Project spokesman Mason Tvert, who welcomes the expanded political support after years of officials lagging far behind voters on the issue.

But the new expressions of support aren’t convincing to some activists — creating a community divide resembling lingering gay-rights qualms about Hillary Clinton, who embraced same-sex marriage ahead of 2016, despite long opposing it, after popular opinion shifted.

There’s a difference between being ‘pro-pot’ and being ‘pro state’s rights’.

It’s not about marijuana, it’s about the fedgove having ZERO business about what STATES allow, or don’t.

It’s a pretty good axiom that whatever changes the Democrats are in favor of should be a pretty good indication of what conservatives should be against.

Never did the stuff once. Im for letting the states legalizing it. I think they are all doing it anyway lol. Let companies say you cant if they want, let people explain the negatives about it, but legalize it Im fine with it. Too many laws right now anyway.

Tactically, it’s a good move for us. I know more than one person who is genuinely conservative, as in loving the Constitution, who distrust drug warriors just as much as any gun grabber. With good reason. Anyone who thinks that cannabis should be an issue the federal government has anything to do with is merely a nanny-stater socialist who happens to also have some social conservative views.

President Trump should legalize weed in trade for the full wall

Actually tax the legal weed to pay for the wall

Watch DemocRATS flip out

And they lost their #1 issue for 2020

Without weed, they got nothing in 2020

Although I would suggest that people generally stay away from the stuff, I agree that this is a classic State’s Rights issue.

Trump is a verified drug warrior. That’s part of why the Wall is important. He truly cares about the opioid crisis. I think Trump could own the Marijuana issue if he said, “Look, plenty of states are voting on this, letting their own people make the call. Let’s get the Feds out of the way. At the national level, we should focus on other things.”

I think this is the right stance. And it would again put SJW into a position of hating a president who is actually doing all the right things. Eventually, those young people will really wake up and make a permanent life choice to oppose the crooked Democrats.

I'm a staunchly anti-marijuana conservative who whole-heartedly agrees with you. As long as I'm understanding you as saying that states should reserve the right to criminialize pot. But would you be in favor of the Feds helping to enforce "bleed over" from states which legalize weed to, or through, states which criminalize it to some degree?

Kansas borders Colorado to the east. Kansas should have the right to completely criminalize marijuana possession, use, buying, selling, etc within its borders. My fear is that people on the border, who live and work in separate states, will inevitably break the law in Kansas. Is this a standing problem that we want? Is it even manageable?

State’s rights are state’s rights.

As far as I’m concerned they could stand a foot inside their border and blow smoke. And get 15 years in pound you in the a** state prison if they stumble in the wrong direction.

there will always be this problem, be it with guns, cannabis, or fireworks. The solution is almost always less federal government and more state’s rights. If it’s a criminal conspiracy then that is a legitimate target for the FBI. But there is seldom a situation that the fedgov can’t nake worse, don’t you agree?

“Pro-pot activists not sure they trust 2020 Democrats....”

I’m thinking that you probably could’ve stopped right there with a lot of them and their libertarian ideas.

Ditto for anti-pot activists, no matter their ideas.

Come to think of it, ditto for anyone with more than 3 functioning neurons.

ReasonS, plural. One of which is that if you taking medical marijuana, or if you are caught smoking the stuff (no matter how legal in your state), you have just disqualified yourself from ever being able to own a firearm (unless, of course, you lie on the 4473, which itself is a disqualifier if your’re caught).

I once inhaled a puff, when very drunk (and, not being a smoker, I burned the crap out of my throat and coughed it right up), but I’m in favor of legalization...so long as anyone who smokes it is held fully responsible for all of the consequences thereof. It isn’t government’s place to control this, and when combined with other laws and regulations it is a key piece of the plan to effectively make all of us mere citizens into serfs.

Oh, I agree that the fed almost always screws things up. Interstate issues are often a little convoluted, though. Not as easy as you depict.

Consider the prospect of a state being completely surrounded by pot-legalizing states. Many people live along the borders. If you work in Kansas, and live in Colorado, you might go shopping at a pot dispensary and then leave your "package" in the car while you drive to work in Kansas. I can see where someone would bring up "constitutionality" arguments as to why they were arrested for merely possessing something that they could legally possess at their home.

And I think those arguments are good ones. As much as I abhor a state having draconian gun laws, I abhor even more the fact they could penalize a citizen carrying a firearm from one free state to another driving through.

the solution is almost always going to be less government. We are in more danger from too many laws than too few.

The danger of a few useless potheads, or even thousands of them, are far less than the danger of a much larger than otherwise necessary police force.

Just as the Democrats are too stupid to see that anti-gun laws are tactically bad for them and good for us. ALL we need to do is get the whole ‘schedule ‘ thing dispensed with- which we should be doing as constitution loving conservatives anyway - to take an issue away from the Democrats. Especially with so many dispensaries, when we can concentrate the publicity on all the stupid taxes the Dems are imposing we might gain ground. More than one former hippie has changed to Republican as soon as they open their own business :-)

Back in the mid-’80s, after he had been defeated in the 1980 Reagan landslide, went home to open a bed & breakfast, and then had the thing go belly up, George McGovern gave an interview to Playboy Magazine. To his credit, he stated that if when he was in Congress he knew what he knew after his business experience, he would have voted much differently on economic matters. While I despised his politics, I did and still do give him credit for being honest (and also for his service in WW2 - he volunteered and piloted 35 missions over Europe in a B-24).

Yeah, sometimes even the dumbest people learn when reality slaps a dead fish across their face.
