An NYPD detective was shot and killed while responding to a robbery at a cellphone store in Queens Tuesday night, and NYPD Commissioner James O'Neill says it appears to be "an absolutely tragic case of friendly fire."
Det. Brian Simonsen, 42, was killed after being hit by gunfire at the T-Mobile store at Atlantic Avenue and 120th Street in Richmond Hill, according to a preliminary investigation, O'Neill said. Simonsen was a 19-year veteran.
Two separate 911 callers reported a robbery in progress at the store and at least one of the callers said two employees had been forced at gunpoint to the back of the store.
Simonsen and his sergeant were working on an unrelated case in the area when they heard the calls come in, O'Neill said. They responded immediately just as patrol units from the 102nd Precinct arrived.
The officers entered the store and saw the suspect emerge from the back, pointing at them with what appeared to be a handgun.
"With the suspect advancing toward them, the officers discharged their weapons and retreated out of the store. That was when Det. Simonsen was shot," O'Neill said.
"His fellow officers put him in a marked police car and transported him here. The trauma staff did their best to try to save him, and we thank them for that. They were unable to do so," O'Neill added.
The sergeant, later identified as Matthew Gorman, who had eight and a half years with the NYPD, was shot in the leg, and was taken to the hospital by a passerby who stopped to help.
"Make no mistake about it: Friendly fire aside, it's because of the action of the suspect that Det. Simonsen is dead," O'Neill said.
The suspect, a 27-year-old career criminal, was shot multiple times and was taken to Booth Memorial Hospital, where he's listed in stable condition. Sources have identified him as Christopher Ransom.

No rapid tourniquet?
You think thats accidental?
can we get the cops some training? What is the effing point of shooting some moron at a phone store and risking everybody else?
Ah, the copsuckers weigh in....
May the same happen to your mom
May your mother be gang raped by a bunch of gangsta thugs because there are no police officers there “playing war” to stop them. You are a pathetic POS

The poster is clearly referring to the cop who shot and killed the dead cop. I love cops and defend them here and anywhere when a comment is out of line in my opinion. I don’t think the poster you replied to out of line. A cop was killed in all likelihood by a someone who had no right being a cop.
You on the other hand, to post what you did, clearly have a demented mind.
Wow you were able to read his mind and know exactly what he meant. Aren't you special. Silly me, I can only go by his initial one sentence reply and then again on his one sentence reply back to me.
“No rapid tourniquet?”
The officer that was hit in the leg survived.
“May your mother be gang raped...”
Why would you say that about his mother? Your comment tells us more about you than any point you were trying to make about the poster.
Regardless of what the poster wrote, it did not warrant your reply.
Here’s what may have happened: Uniformed officers arrive on the scene in response to a call about an armed man holding hostages. Plainclothed detectives arrived separately after hearing the report over the radio. Uniformed cops shoot the detectives because they see them with guns drawn and don’t know they’re cops.
Det. Brian Simonsen, 42, was killed after being hit...
The sergeant, later identified as Matthew Gorman, who had eight and a half years with the NYPD, was shot in the leg...
Oh. Ok.

Yes, THAT was clear. From what person(s) gun did the friendly fire bullets originate? Did they shoot each other? Did one of them somehow manage to both accidentally kill/wound himself and kill/wound the other? Were they shot by the other arriving officer(s)? Some weird combination of the previous possibilities?
Sign me ..... Someone who passed 8th grade English
So we have two separate acts here? He was shot already and then someone killed him.
Who needs a bullet proof vest when all the cops have guns?
You are correct, I was out of line. My wife and my son are both LEOs and I let my emotions get the best of me, I should have replied in a more measured manner
Us humans are interesting characters. I can where your emotions got stirred. I appreciate your reply and greatly appreciate the service of your wife and son.
This is only necessary for those of us subject to accountability. In general, police are allowed to ignore this rule.
