alfornia Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) just announced in his State of the State address to the legislature that he’s giving up on statewide high-speed rail from Sacramento to San Diego:

!! AP: California Gov. Gavin Newsom abandoning plan for high-speed train from Los Angeles to San Francisco, says too costly.

— Jon Passantino (@passantino) February 12, 2019

“Let’s be real,” he says a little too late:

Gov Newsom on high speed rail: “Let’s be real… the project as currently planned would cost too much and take too long.”

— Ashley Zavala (@ZavalaA) February 12, 2019

It’s almost as if conservatives warned about this from Day 1:

Gov. Newsom says high speed rail project is too expensive and would take too long, acknowledges lack of transparency and oversight, adds that abandoning project would mean billions of wasted $$ and years of wasted time. Says capacity does exist to build HSR in Central Valley.

— AirTalk (@AirTalk) February 12, 2019

He does want to build around 165 miles of track in the Central Valley between Bakersfield and Merced:

Making big news, Newsom says he's going to cut back the high speed rail project to only cover a segment from Merced to Bakersfield.

— Taryn Luna (@TarynLuna) February 12, 2019

And he plans on keeping the $3.5 billion grant given to the state during the Obama administration:

“I have no interest in sending back 3.5 billion dollars allocated for this project.” Gavin Newsom rebukes expansive #highspeedrail project from Northern to Southern CA, but advocates a high speed rail heading into Central Valley @FOX40 pic.twitter.com/xJpuMBCBDU

— Joe Khalil (@JoeKhalilTV) February 12, 2019

BS. The state should have to give it back to the U.S. Treasury.

I seem to recall something in the news recently about a Green New Deal expanding high speed rail to get rid of unnecessary air travel...something that AOC girl was positing as saving the country...wonder what happened to that?

I think all federal grants in CA should be cancelled and the savings added up until it reaches the $3.5B CA just stole from us. I want interest too, actually.

Well, you see, California spent “only” the federal dollars so far! The rest of the money is “all” state and local money so, obviously, none of the remaining dollars needs to be given back.

Now we get down to the heart of the matter.
Balance the state budget with stolen federal money.

Standard operating procedure for democrat leaders. Always shifting money from one bucket to another. In San Francisco, they got billions of fed dollars for building the TransBay Terminal supposedly for housing the high-speed trains. The money for the train platform was shifted away for buses, parks and other pet projects. Now there's no money for the high-speed train platform and tunnel from existing trains, and the train platform is an empty hole in the ground while the city searches for more federal billions to complete it. They were shifting money around all over the place.

My guess is Newsom will be shifting some money out of the $3.5B to his friends in SF for political favors.

Yep the $$ spent so far has been Prop. 1A money ($9 billion) and the Feds “stimulus” $3.5 billion...Gavin plans to build out a small segment of roadbed (Amtrak will probably use it to bypass freight trains) so he doesn’t have to pay the Feds back. Or it could be the most expensive bike path ever!!

How many people want to travel from Bakersfield to Merced? LOL What a total waste of money.

Exactly. Who in the hell wants high speed rail from Merced to Bakersfield? What a freakin' joke. If there is some huge unmet need for public transit between Merced and Bakersfield, it'd be a lot cheaper to run a bunch of buses up and down I-5 (hell, even electric buses if you wanna be ''green").

This is a transparent attempt by Gavin Newsom to pull the plug on this boondoggle BUT do so in a way that "saves face" with regard to the money already wasted AND not return the federal money.

It only takes 2 - 2 1/2 hours to drive from Merced to Bakersfield. What is high speed rail really going to save commuters?

What happens in Merced or Bakersfield? I mean either it is SF/Sacramento or LA.

If he is supposed to return it..

Deduct it from any future payments.

If he is not required to return it.

Fire the idiot(s) in DC that made that deal.
