ELECTRIC VEHICLES? DON’T GET ‘EM COLD!
Powerline ^ | Febuary 9,2019 | JOHN HINDERAKER

Are electric vehicles the wave of the future, or expensive toys? This shocking news story–shocking if you live in the North, anyway–suggests the latter *** Many owners discovered the range limitations last week when much of the country was in the grips of a polar vortex. Owners of vehicles made by manufacturers including Tesla, the top-selling electric vehicle company in the U.S., complained on social media about reduced range and frozen door handles during the cold snap.

Frozen door handles are an annoyance not unique to electric cars, but reduced range can be life-threatening.

At 20 degrees, the average driving range fell by 12 percent when the car’s cabin heater was not used. When the heater was turned on, the range dropped by 41 percent, AAA said.

Of course, at 20 degrees you pretty much have to turn the heater on. T

Also, AAA tested the vehicles at 20 degrees above zero, a balmy temperature that we haven’t seen for a while here in the Twin Cities. What happens at 20 below, a temperature we have seen several times in the last week or two? Or eleven below, which it is at this moment where I live? A car whose range is severely compromised at such temperatures could be a death trap.

Advocates of “green” energy say that giant batteries will overcome the intractable problem of the intermittency–i.e., unreliability–of wind and solar energy. Of course, while batteries can power my laptop for six or eight hours, or a vehicle for a relatively short distance, no batteries exist that can power a city for six months, nor is any such technology on the horizon. But I wonder whether green energy advocates who toss around the word “batteries” much as they might say “magic” have considered the impact of cold weather.

All of them are Trump voters, so I don’t know why Team Freeper insists on pretending that Teslas are just expensive toys for leftists- you all need to get out more.

*************************
No, leftists like things that other people pay for, aka,Tesla’s. When do we get a chance to drive your friends cars since our tax money helped pay for them? You get it? Maybe you need to get out more.

I can stop at the local QT or other fuel station enroute to my destination for fuel, I don’t need to search for a charging station.

I'm on my 2nd Leaf. It's a fine car that requires next to nothing in maintenance. I've probably saved close to $6k in gasoline costs with it over the past 4 years. Mercedes & BMW are creating EV's for every one of their models over the next 2 years. Chevy has the Bolt with a 240 mile range - friend has one the only drawback I see is it's a bit smaller than I'd like. I'm not impressed with Tesla's - too many engineering flaws (gaps in the doors are big & interior siding comes off too easily). Folks can complain all they want, but if the charging infrastructure ever gets put in place strategically, the EV market will take off. 2023 is a critical year for the technology.

Congratulations on your well above average yield.

Ethanol is a crap fuel that was forced on us with a created enforced market. Those two factors alone make it inconsequential to me but it has been great for farm economies, ADM, Cargill, John Deere and legions of others feeding at that trough. You didn’t mention cost of fertilizers to grow the corn since our soils are mostly just root anchors now or transportation.

As i recall, the last time ethanol was left to sink or swim on its own. It sank. I think I still have some worthless Farmer’s Coop bonds from at least one unprofitable misadventure of the 80s. Back then the country was littered with failed food to ethanol pie in the sky good time rock and roll plants. All this is simply anechdotal evidence to counter your assertion so it doesn’t count for much I suppose.

Somewhere I have a slide presentation though that pretty well hammers ethanol as a net loss based on more average yields and breakeven to the price of fossil fuels. It cant compete even if it is a btu break even. Oil has to be painfully expensive for ethanol to begin to compete as I recall. the evaluation was done by a chemical engineer and petroleum engineer at least 15 years ago. Based on that I’ve dismissed ethanol for a long time. Maybe there is some breakthrough I didn’t realize and our evaluation should be updated.

Ethanol is still a crap fuel forced on us by misdirected tre e huggers and self promoting special interests with huge conflicts of interest. On the basis of those two factors alo ne I would not burn the crap it it were free because of principals alone.

Wait until the interior glue comes off of those Tesla interiors.

I’m sold on EV’s, but I don’t think the interiors are anything to sing about.

Run a loss/gain model on ethanol production from ground up and it’s a loss leader.

That does not change the follower’s minds though. Ridicule only deepens their resolve I fear. Maybe the followers can be swayed with the truth just forgetting the argument. The truth is their plan will ruin our economy and most of our way of life just like socialism / communism has every where else.

I do have to say though the gap between the top and even the next rung is obscene. With great wealth and ability come great responsibility. I’m just not seeing a lot of the responsibility part.

A coworker said way back in the 80s: You take away a man’s opportunity to get rich and you take away his motivation to excel. Not all of us want just food clothing and shelter. If that were so I doubt we would have many of the things we really enjoy a whole lot now.

Just tow a generator. Should get about 10 MPG.

Couldn't you just tow an extra battery?

The only advantage in an electric car in cold weather is it may be easier to start...but if you cannot get to where you want to go what good is it...

There is no perfect car or truck...you have to pick the best one for your needs...

Most people are lucky they have a car

Now you’ve done it. Told them a secret. The marxists will ignore it because they know there is no real problem, they simply want destruction.

65k miles, six years, and the interior is perfect. Wears better than my last BMW.

“Never been in a traffic jam during a rush hour blizzard, eh? “

Of course I have, but lots of gas can be used trying to keep a car warm——and getting in and out to make sure that the tailpipe is clear can be tiring if the drifting is bad.

Sounds like you’re the one here asking for something free.

Shell out your own money for a Tesla and you can ride all you want. Or you can hand out rides to all the deadbeats who think that you owe them a ride because you got a break from the tax code.

Dairy farmers have been getting tax subsidies since FDR. It never occurred to me to knock on their door and ask for free milk.

Captain obvious thread.
Batteries have lower capacity when cold.
