House and Senate negotiators are closing in on a possible border security agreement that would fund new technology, additional border patrol agents, and likely some kind of fencing in certain areas along the southern border.
Theres no mention of a wall in the deal, per orders of Democratic leaders who vehemently oppose it.
But President Trump seems to be more flexible to whatever the deal entails, Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman Richard Shelby, R-Ala., divulged to lawmakers in a private lunch Thursday.
I gave a report on meeting with the president and I thought things were on the positive trajectory as far as maybe concluding the funding, Shelby said. But we are not there yet.
Shelby said Thursday afternoon that the next 72 hours would be critical if Democrats and Republicans are to reach a long-sought deal on border security that would also allow passage of seven spending bills and ensure full government funding by a Feb. 15 deadline.
Weve got serious negotiations going on, Shelby said.
The main sticking point is how much money to provide for border barriers and what those barriers will look like.
Democrats appear willing to agree to funding for some new fencing in targeted areas as well as upgrades to existing barriers, they told the Washington Examiner.
The deal is likely to cover far fewer miles than Trump wants, however, and the barriers will be far less robust than the steel slat wall Trump favors.
Shelby would not disclose whether Trump would agree to less than the $5.7 billion he has requested for border barriers, or a wall, as he calls it. But he hinted Trump may be willing to make a deal on price.

Bush League Republicans MUST become extinct before the Republic does.
It’s not just President Trump’s reelection that is at stake, but the survival of the nation.
If the wall is not made of the robust construction steel slats, for the entire length that we need, NO DEAL. Do not cave, Mr. Trump! Tell the dummocraps to stick it. We need the security!
I smell a cave
Fakenews
I want a wall, not some dumb fence that RATS will rip down easy.
The talking heads and some Congress creeps keep saying it is a matter of semantics. NO IT IS NOT. There is a big difference between a fence and a wall.
Tag line says it all.

Enough of the Javanka WH .
The FR Pearl Clutchers League will be all over this. Hysteria to follow.
What was Trump's first cave?
These folks make up news and consider it a scoop...but they know cr**....except for all the leaks.
Maybe everyone here that was bashing Coulter will end up eating crow?
70% of the American people support the wall. Any negotiated deal with the Rats means the president and American people get screwed. Trump should declare as much and start the wall through executive action. At least Trump can make the case in 2020 that the swamp and its judicial stooges will eventually be beaten in Supreme Court and the wall will be completed if he is re-elected.
The problem is every time we get rid of one, another pops up. We dumped Flake and Corker and got Romney in exchange. Plus a code pinker in AZ.
“I smell a cave”
Not necessarily. Take the deal with whatever you can get, then declare an emergency to fill any remaining gaps at the border with barriers that the deal does not cover. If Trump plays his cards right the entire border can have a secure wall.
Building the wall is very important.
I have no problem with patriotic Freepers erroring on the side of "Don't Cave, Build the Damn Wall."
just came back from emailing POTUS @ the WH web site.
No compromise.
We got Blackburn in place of Corker, that a plus, even if the Morons of Utah elected Romney.
McSallycain got her a Senate seat even though she lost to the code pinker.
That’s not really a plus.
