Friends of Highgate Cemetery calls attack a ‘particularly inarticulate form of political comment’
The tomb of Karl Marx at London’s Highgate cemetery has been vandalised in a targeted attack that means the Grade I-listed monument will “never be the same again”.
The suspected vandal damaged a marble plaque which was taken from Marx’s original 1881 gravestone and incorporated into the 1954 monument.
Images of the defaced memorial, which attracts tens of thousands of visitors each year, show what appears to be damage done by a hammer to the lettering of Marx’s name and the marble on which it is mounted.
Ian Dungavell, the chief executive of the Friends of Highgate Cemetery Trust, condemned the attack as “an appalling thing to do” and a “particularly inarticulate form of political comment”, warning that the tomb would be permanently scarred.

What’s the big deal?
George Orwell was determined to really find out how the working class really lived. He, low on funds, beat his way up to impoverished Northern England in the 1930's. His classic book was titled "The Road to Wigan Pier". It was a working jetty. A sarcastic remark made by persons when asked "where do you go for your holidays?"- Wigan Pier.
To his chagrin he noted that some of those who championed the cause of the poor got elected to council. The first thing they did when they got extra monies was to put lace curtains in their windows. Orwell wrote that they considered themselves now "middle class". He was not impressed.

Marx had plenty of marble he wasn’t using. Someone else needed that marble. Wouldn’t Marx have approved this redistribution of resources?

Marx thought Russians were irredeemably backwards, and certainly never visited Russia. Spent the last 30+ years of his life in London.
