If Ralph Northam hoped to use his extraordinary press conference on Saturday to convince top Virginia Democrats to side with him as others call for his swift resignation, the governor failed.
Stunningly. Northam's hour-long news conference about a racist photo showing one person dressed in blackface and another in the Ku Klux Klan's signature white hood and robes in his medical school yearbook page was an inflection point in the saga that now drags into its third day. The bizarre press conference at the governor's mansion featured denials that he ever dressed up in a KKK robe and hood, pledges that he was never drunk enough to forget a situation like that and a revelation that Northam once did darken his face to resemble Michael Jackson during a dance contest in 1984.

If wild game hunters are going to be exposed in the news why isn't the identity of one half of a national news story's “couple” being discussed?
And why aren't people discussing the editor who approved the inclusion of this photo in the first place?
I saw a headline yesterday saying that the school does not tolerate or condone such behavior. Really? Fake outrage from school administrators. It was approved less than 40 years ago. Or did the school recall and destroy the yearbooks before the graduates received them?

I have a friend who is a near contemporary of Northam’s at EVMS. He says he and his schoolmates are being bombarded with posts on their Facebook walls calling them racists, all thanks to Northam. The entire school is being painted with this broad brush.

I understand that the VA constitution only allows for impeachment for malfeasance while in office. So a 35 year old photo isn't grounds for impeachment. Advocating infanticide, OTOH...

My friend was not in Northam's class so he didn't know about the yearbook until we all found out. I also found it strange that no one in the class apparently complained. Maybe there is a backstory that we are unaware of.

In 1984, how do you complain about a book that arrives in the mail after you have graduated? To whom? By what means? Phone calls would be long forgotten by now and the clerk who took them long retired. A letter? Who in 1984 would take the time to write it? Where would it be stored now? How would you access it?
In 1984 there was no social media and the world was a good deal less excitable. If anyone, for example, had tried the #metoo thing they’d have been scoffed at. The social pressures that are moving continents today were nonexistent then. Somebody did something stupid, you shrugged and moved on with your life.
It was 1984. I would not want to be responsible for some retarded stuff my Med School classmates did (Class of ‘83). Fortunately my Med School wisely had no yearbook (at least AFAIK). That said, he’s a Rat and needs to hang by Rat standards.
Good points. By the time the yearbooks arrived everyone was into their internships, working 80+ hours per week, with no time or energy to be concerned with yearbooks, if they even looked at them.
The Democrats demonstrating by example just who exactly the KKK is.
Med school class of '82 here, and I have no memory of a yearbook either. That said, I can't imagine any of us dressing up that way. And I hope Northam hangs in there, a constant thorn in the Democrats side.
Clearing the deck to put the more extreme liberal black Lt. Governor into office IMHO. When have you EVER seen the media asking a Democrat to disavow anything another Democrat did/said? That should tell you the fix is in.
