The US Super Bowl halftime show, one of pop music's most visible gigs, this year went from highly coveted to largely unwanted, leaving the NFL scrambling for takers as a cultural firestorm over social justice rages.

Prominent artists including Rihanna, P!nk and Cardi B reportedly turned down the offer to headline Sunday's championship game between the New England Patriots and Los Angeles Rams, amid the controversy over racially charged police brutality protests spearheaded by former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick.

First World problems. Slave descendants are fortunate to live in this country. Their distant cousins fare far worse in this cruel world.

I don’t care!

The NFL can self-destruct without me, because I am not watching and I don’t care!

Did I mention that I don’t care?

Vic Oyedeji of North Carolina launched the petition, calling a boycott "the only way to affect the bottom line."

"The NFL owners, they only see the bottom line. Let's be frank," he told AFP.

No, YOU be Frank, Vic. :0)

Neither will I, but it’s very interesting as a commercial phenomenon.

Interesting. The Wall Street Journal doesn’t have anything on this. Maybe they’ll analyze the ad metrics after the fact.

“Since 2016 the NFL has seen its reputation increasingly challenged after Kaepernick began taking a knee during the playing of the national anthem, a bid to draw attention to racial injustice.”

The only “racial injustice” I see is young blacks are less than 10% of the population, yet commit more than 50% of murders nationwide. I see racial injustice in FBI stats that show the number of white women, some quite elderly, raped by blacks, and zero black women raped by whites. Homie need to clean up his act.

If they’re bad, and I suspect they will be, the stories will likely get spiked or spun.

The move appeared to be an attempt by the National Football League to soothe anger not only over Kaepernick but also at having a mostly white California pop band star in the southern city of Atlanta, the capital of hip hop innovation.

Really? Since when? I think you meant LA.

If you want REAL Atlanta sound, ask the Allman Bros to come out of retirement. Or get the Black Crowes. Or Lynyrd Skynyrd. Or .38 Special. Even REM is Georgian.

Spun, certainly. The WSJ is serious about what sells, not about what doesn’t.

I read the 1850s threads from Homer_J_Simpson. There is often a fashion spread in “Harper’s Weekly,” obviously aimed at the well-off rather than those in rags. However, there is a mildly ironic tone to the clothing commentary, and a strongly ironic tone in cartoons and editorial comments.

The Wall Street Journal, by contrast, is never ironic about fashion or personal consumption articles. It’s all very “straight-reportage,” as if normal people out in the real world are expected to find it serious, important, and seriously important.

Back when the Bill Clinton was in office there was some event down at the mall in Washington DC being televised, I think it might have been the 4th of July... Anyway, there was this one segment that I happened to catch on the tube and it was Vernon Reid from Living Colour, John Fogerty from CCR, and Bill Clinton on the tenor sax. It was God awful ... but perhaps they can be booked for the Super Bowl Halftime this year too.
