Much of the world has been transfixed in the last few days by a yellow notepad held by National Security Advisor John Bolton, which seemed to suggest that the US was considering military action against Venezuela.
But in Taiwan, it was the map hanging behind him at the very same White House briefing that has captured much of the attention.
The map at the Monday press briefing, presented by Bolton and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, made a distinction between the self-ruled island of Taiwan and mainland China.
Beijing has in recent years wielded its economic power to pressure multinational companies into following Chinese protocol when referring to Taiwan and depicting it in maps.
The Communist Party-ruled China has never governed Taiwan, but the Chinese government has ordered international airlines and hotels to explicitly identify Taiwan as belonging to China on their websites.
The White House map was aimed at illustrating international views towards Venezuela’s socialist President Nicolas Maduro.
The US, which has announced sweeping sanctions on Venezuela, was marked in blue. Mainland China and Russia were marked in red, along with other supporters of the embattled president.
But the democratic island of Taiwan was in gray, indicating it does not have a position on this matter.
Clothing retailer Gap last year apologized after a T-shirt that showed a map of China without Taiwan caused nationalistic anger on the Chinese internet.

In other words, Team Trump doesn’t just troll America’s domestic enemies. They also troll our foreign enemies. I’m loving it!

Or said differently, team Trump doesn’t play along with China’s fantasy land world where they rule Taiwain. About time someone stopped letting them bully the world into an elaborate game of make-believe to sooth their delicate sensitivities.

I think that is the point.....
The sign reads “Taiwan is not China”. That’s very true! Taiwan has a right to exist outside of the clutches of Red China.
But here’s the thing about neocons like John Bolton. They sound good. But the next thing you know, the U.S. is involved in some damn avoidable war somewhere. So yeah, I’m very leery of anything Bolton says or does.
In 1968, Red China issued a postage stamp celebrating the revolution. The caption read, “we are all red now”, and depicted a map of china colored red. Unfortunately for the printer, they neglected to color Taiwan red. They pulled it almost immediately, making it a rarity. The printer disappeared, according to legend.

“transfixed’???? Seems like a clickbait headline, greatly exaggerated.
If you read the article it gives merely a couple of examples of online users noticing the gray.... nothing to indicate that ALL of “Taiwan” is “transfixed”....
A really good thing about Trump is that he refuses to PRETEND. And that refers to a lot of things, from Glow Bull Warming to border laws.

Regardless, it is newsworthy.
